Boots windows, but not bios

JerryBond

Hello!

If i start pc it takes a few seconds for keyboard to light up (time for me to press del to boot bios), and if i press it, it stays frozen there. monitor recieves no input, but ctrl+alt+del still work to make it restart.

After restarting without pressing buttons, same happens and then keyboard lights go off for 2s, then back on and within 3s i'm at windows login screen.

I am able to do some basic oc settings through hardware's dedicated software within windows (made stock for troubleshooting)

i have F3 version of bios, and know i should update it to F11, but as i normaly do it from bios i'm having doubts, and hope you can recomend me the SAFER option.

currently i could do it via bios flashback through usb, or gigabyte app center, bios app, and there either from server or update from file.

https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/X570-GAMING-X-rev-10/support#support-dl-bios

on this site F11 bios includes the bios file, batch file, efiflash tool and notepad with:

Usage :
efiflash [Input or Output File Name] [Command]..

   Switch options for Efiflash.exe:
/C - Clear DMI data. (default: Keep DMI data)
/S - Save Original BIOS Image to Disk
/R - Reboot System after BIOS Update
/DB- Update both main & backup BIOS

and i'm not sure which of these apply to me.

What i tried doing so far:

  • clear cmos by shorting pins on mb by manual
  • selecting booting bios through windows recovery advanced options, with the same result
  • unpluging two HDDs, so only nvme ssd boot drive is left
  • tried posting with hdmi or display port cable
  • re-seating all components but cpu(seeing i can play all my games on ultra settings i doubt it would be cpu/gpu problem)

Are you able to access UEFI BIOS if you hold Shift while clicking Restart? This gives you a menu where you can go to advanced and there should be an option there for UEFI Settings.

Workstation:

Intel Core i7 6700K | AMD Radeon R9 390X | 16 GB RAM

Mobile Workstation:

MacBook Pro 15" (2017) | Intel Core i7 7820HQ | AMD Radeon Pro 560 | 16 GB RAM

I haven't done it by holding shift (thx for info in future debugging), but as pictured on this link, so basically the same result.

*edit: i thought i should add i have fast startup in windows power options disabled.

A narrow point having to do with the definition of “boot” which might or might not windup being useful anyway:

My memory is a machine Can’t boot windows without ufei. it’s possible it’s not showing it or allowing you to access it though.  Iirc there’s a setting that does that.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Might be that your specific GPU and monitor combo cannot display the UEFI due to them not supporting the display mode that the UEFI uses. I would try a different monitor/TV or a different connection type on your GPU.

i tried it with both gtx770 and gtx1070, over hdmi and dp. It will be hard to get another monitor, but i'll try testing that too.
any ideas which of og post options for bios update would be safest? my bet is from app and server, but would still like to check with you guys :)

edit: i updated bios, saw the gigabyte logo (thought it fixed it), booted windows 10, restarted, and still can't get in.

Do you have a TV that you can use to test?

removed all your drives.
If the bios can't find a drive to boot from them it should kick you into bios.
I think you might have the boot up going too fast. There's an option within bios saying something like "wait 5 seconds to continue". What this option does is hold your boot screen for 5 seconds (where it either shows your gigabyte logo or hardware specs). Loads of people put this to 1 second without realising just how fast that is, faster than your USB can initialise. Put it at 3 seconds minimum.

It's not a race to the bottom.

That can't be the problem, as i have 2s to press it before keyboard lights go off, then on again when windows is selected.

I'm sure i can catch that 2s because when i do press delete, it's stuck with a black screen and keyboard lights on. any combo of keys does not help, other than ctrl alt del, which immediatelly reboots the pc.

Another reason why timing is't the problem, is that this happens when selecting change uefi settings in advanced windows recovery options, that bypasses having to press the right key at the right time, as mentioned in original post.

I have managed to get into bios on few random ocasions, but i don't know which of the settings may be at fault.

This probably excludes the screen beeing at fault as well.

There must be something else...

After previous reply, i tried through shift-restart-change uefi firmware settings, got a black screen, and out of curiosity pressed F10 & enter, and it indeed restarted pc.

Meaning you're right, it's a problem of displaying bios to the screen, for some reason.

I don't have another tv monitor avaliable at the moment, will tell when i do, for sakes of others finding solution to this if it need be :)

Had the same issue, and while I didn't have a different monitor to test, the monitor I had had a pip option, allowing me to load Bios in the 1080p pip. I guess my gigabyte B450 DS3H UEFI with a Red Devil RX480 can't handle a 4k screen...
This actually helped me out immensely. I thought I was going crazy.
