I've been a builder for awhile, and the only thing I know are internal SSD drives.

I understand external SSD's are no different from their internal parts.

BUT, there are different companies that I have never worked with. I only am familiar with Samsung, Crucial, PNY (used it once to get a cheap deal). I am not sure about other companies as Adata, WD & Seagate (onlyt familiar wioth hdd sector)

If you guys have any ideas. I'm preparing to put this in a NAS. Using USB3 my new Pi4. And maybe some other stuff. Because all my HDDs I own are long past their days. 5-15 years old. They are seeing their last days, and I'd just hate to lose them.

I thought of getting an internal then an external, but that is really stacking up the price.

I'm quite open to anything. :)

Even with USB3 external SSDs can only go as fast as the port allows, your best option especially for a NAS system is internal drives. Depending on the size of SSD you're trying to get  the prices shouldn't be too bad, you can get decent quality 500GB drives for around $45 to $50. WD(Westen Digital) is one of the most known brands of drive out there same with Seagate, Adata's are alright nothing super special and nothing really terrible. Unless you absolutely have to have SSD storage you can go for a couple 2TB Seagate Barracuda drives, they're 2TB 7200rpm HDDs and usually run about $50 each.

Main Desktop: CPU - i9-14900k | Mobo - Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite AX | GPU - PNY Gaming OC RTX 5080 16GB RAM - Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 64GB 6400mhz | AIO - Arctic Liquid Freezer III 360mm | PSU - Corsair RM1000X | Case - Hyte Y40 - White | Storage - Samsung 980 Pro 1TB Nvme /  Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus 4TB Nvme / Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB Nvme / Samsung 870 EVO 4TB SSD / Samsung 870 QVO 2TB SSD/ Samsung 860 EVO 500GB SSD|

TV Streaming PC: Intel Nuc CPU - i7 13th Gen | RAM - 16GB DDR4 3200mhz | Storage - Crucial P3 Plus 1TB Nvme |

Phone: Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra - Black 256GB |

Being a Pi4, I can't run a SATA HDD/SSD. Unless I get an internal and an enclosure, which I said will be too much money.

2.5 laptop hdds arent that well for a NAS.... AFAIK

Unless you're rocking a 10 gigabit network with basically one or two devices solely accessing it, the network is going to negate storage performance benefits anyway.

Also the drive I have, a 4TB WD Black (I have my reservations with WD for using that branding, but whatever) is adequate to play games directly off from.
