second monitor went dark

hey everyone

I've been using two monitor setup for a while now but suddenly my second monitor went dark. it is in fact on and showing stuff but it's really really dark...

sometimes, when you screw around with the frequency it goes back to normal but after sleep or a shutdown it's back to dark. other times it does a little flash to normal and goes dark again.

I tried changing the cable it started fine but it happened again. tried another monitor it works fine but I didn't reset the to see what happens. 

any suggestions?

PS. main monitor is connected VIA HDMI, second monitor is connected VIA VGA because it's an old LCD
