Seems alright. Not a fan of gaming laptops tbh, find them overpriced, think calling them “portable” is false advertising as you need to be attached to a wall to use them for over an hour, they’re loud, hot and run Windows “shudder”. More a MacBook kinda guy.

I wanted something light and portable. I am not on Apple's ecosystem so no apple products.

I also wanted to lightly game a little.

MacBooks are light and portable... you can also game on them just with a smaller library.

Also you dint need to be in the ecosystem. MacOS even outside the ecosystem crushes windows in usability and day to day use. The ecosystem is just a lovely place to be in if you can afford it. Also you get the trackpad of the gods.

issue is price with the bottom end 16” pro costing 2400 however you can pay for Apple products monthly over 18 months so it’s a bit more manageable.

I hate how expensive apple products are for what they are really worth...

I do not buy it and I will never buy it. I heard on the news that they may not do so well this year and the following since they stopped innovating like they did in the past. I knew sooner or later they will stop doing it. They better show the world something amazing this year.

You’re paying for the OS and access to all the exclusive things on it. Think about it though too if you’re gonna use office that’s £60 a year. Say 5 years for a laptop that’s £300 whereas on MacOS you get an office suite for free, Adobe premier is over 200 a year vs FCP being a 300? One off purchase, again over 5 years that’s 1000 vs 300 plus you don’t have to rebuy FCP you just download it for free onto your new MacBook when you replace the current ones so it’s more like 300 vs 200 times however many years you use premier (And FCP is better). You can use a Mac out of the box for a lot of things before you need to download stuff, Windows is very bare. Also you’re relying on drivers for your GPU for example and we all know how nvidia loves updating more than their last 2 gens of cards don’t we 900 and 700 series owners! Apple keeps on top of those things.

Sure a Mac is more expensive out of the gate but you get a much better OS, the access to both Windows and MacOS, cheaper software, better longevity, optimisation and better support. So yeah you might be paying more now but you’ll save in the long run and more than likely hold onto the laptop for longer.

Also you don’t need to carry a mouse everywhere with a MacBook.

1. I am not buying into subscription to MS office. I don't need the bells and whistle it comes with...

2. What is FCP?

3. I do no use Adobe Premier.

4. I don't mind updating the drivers (Graphic wise) as I do check up on things every few weeks. System check.

5. Highly doubt I can play games that well on a mac vs a pc. I do say this with a grain of salt but in the past it was impossible to do it. I always loved the Windows experience when gaming.

6. Also I NEED to use a mouse when using a computer. I HATE track pads or whatever apple calls it. I love to LEFT click and RIGHT click.

I'll wait and see in the spring/summer what I should go with but for now if I have to buy apple product I think I would just consider the ipad. They sure know how to make an attractive tablet. Maybe 2020 is the year Android makes a huge come back.

You mean you don’t need basic functionality?

Final Cut Pro

On about general usage for what a lot of people get MacBook Pro’s for

it’s not updating them that’s the issue it’s the vendor offering updates that are at least competent. Nvidia Card’s for example tank after a couple of gems because nvidia doesn’t care about them that long.

You can run Windows on a Mac and gaming on a Mac is pretty much the same the library is just a lot smaller and you can’t get a 2080 in a MacBook obviously.

You can right click on a MacBook... it’s just you use 2 fingers not one... and everyone hates windows track pads because they suck, go to an Apple shop and try a trackpad, they’re stupidly good.

nah iPadOS just isn’t good enough to be a laptop replacement, I had an iPad and it just didn’t do the right things.

I mean you can get free LibreOffice on Windows? Also not everyone needs a video editor, I've never used one. I'm using a 5 year old laptop with a 960m and still get nvidia driver updates, so no clue what you're talking about. Just accept that if you want to game, you just don't buy a macbook. And you can't use trackpads for everything. I mean even basic CAD work makes a dedicated mouse a necessity. Windows precision trackpads are pretty great, never had to complain about them. Apple things are generally quite overpriced and everyone knows it. About macOS I have always used Windows and like most of us here I am quick to pick things up, certainly if it involves pc's, but everytime I have to use my gf's mba I feel like my grandpa. I just can't figure it out so I'll stick with windows.

Does “out of the box” mean anything to you?

You still get updates but performance tanks, look at the 700 series now.

windows precision has nothing on the macs trackpad and it’s really doesn’t.

its fairly easy to figure out just use if for a week or 2 and you pick it up.

If you can't be bothered to download some free software then I understand why you own a Mac. All jokes aside just leave it, I like my trackpad, I like to game and I'm used to Windows. I'm happy for you if you're satisfied with your mbp but you let's agree that for most people the higher price tag doesn't make much sense, if you don't need Mac specific software.

The other option is google docs which is online, office online which is online with limited functionality. Both don’t let you store stuff to your machine, windows online is horrendous for letting you do stuff with it.

Kinda does just to get away from windows, kinda have to have it for a gaming PC but I’ve had countless issues, I’ve recently had to wipe a drive because “windows failed to update”, I can’t delete an update package and redownload it to see if that’s the issue because nooooo Microsoft likes to push its updates and essentially lock you out of deciding to update or not. It also likes to randomly set the year to 2060 so all of my programs instantly brick on booting into windows. Thankfully they’ve fixed the taskbar icons like volume so they actually work now though they were temperamental for 18 months requiring a restart to use them.

MacOS is a much more stable and overall better OS than Windows, for just general use I’d recommend the bottom MacBook Air over any windows laptop.

Still don't see what's wrong with a 3rd party solution. Or just buy Office 2019 if you really want it, keys regularly sell for less then 50 euros.

Seems like you've had the worst possible luck ever with windows. my gf's macbook air also recently just stopped producing any sound. Apple ofcourse told her a motherboard replacement was necessary (great customer support and got to love their opinion on right to repair but that's a whole other story), while an hour of research and testing just fixed it... Maybe it has been more stable for you, in my (very modest) 2 years of experience with macOS, it has been on par with windows for me (not for usability of course, like I already mentioned, I'm terrible with macOS).

Sure I'd probably recommend the 2015 mba as well (next to some windows machines), 900 euro for a thin and light with decent performance for most people, great build quality and outstanding battery life, pretty decent deal if you ask me. But the moment you want more performance and some bang for your buck, you have to go elsewhere.

This is where I'll probably end it because we are going way of topic and it seems like we aren't going to change each other's opinion.

Have a nice day!
