ARM unveils Cortex A-17CPU and Mali T-720 GPU / MediaTek MT6595

ARM unveils their new CPU architecture called the A-17. The Processor is said to satisfy the needs of the mid-range phone segment, Smart TVs and also the High end market. The architecture is said to support the big.LITTLE architecture used in Samsung's latest octa-core Exynos chips. The A-17 CPU was launched along side the Mali T-720 GPU that is supposed to offer OpenGL ES 3.0 support and plenty of optimizations for low-end Android devices.

ARM Claims that the A-17 is 60% faster than the Cortex A-9. There is no actual time-frame of release specified as of now but it is expected to make it's way into the 8 Core CPUs in the second half of the Year.

On that note,

MEDIATEK has new competition for the Qualcomm line-up with their

new octa-core processor

MediaTek, the Taiwanese based company launched the world's first TRUE Octa core SOC and now planning to keep that up and have launched their new  MT6595 CPU. The CPU is said to be the direct competition to the Snapdragon 800 and 805 CPUs. The MT6595 will consist of four 2.2-2.5GHz A17 cores and four 1.7GHz A7s. This coupled with the Rogue PowerVR Series6 GPU to take care of the GPU side of things.

The SOC claims to have the worlds first H.265 Ultra HD Codec built-in to the platform, which offers 4K2K video recording and playback capabilities. This could also mean that that with more devices having a H265 decoder large resolution files can be streamed in relatively smaller sizes. Although the chip will be available across all countries MediaTek aims to have a greater presence in the US

It's similar to the move HTC is taking. Phones like the Nexus and the moto X & G have changed the way most of the regular consumers think on price to performance. ARM is just filling the gap that the A-15 couldn't fill ..

nVidia K1 dead?

K1 is based on the Cortex A57  much faster

and the dual core variant is much faster

not to mention the GPU which is in a different realm

So the quad core variant is dead?

So the quad core variant is dead?

no no both will be available

im not sure what the dual core variant is aimed at ( the advantage is fast single threaded performance)

I think K1 won't find itself in consumer mobile devices that easily because...I think it will very much find its way into cars...and other automotive devices....
