I am wanting to get into VR gaming, mainly beat saber and some VRchat.  I don't want to fork over the 1000 dollars for a vive pro,  a little out of my budget, and the oculus rift s is cheap enough for me, but i am wondering how does oculus rift s  compare to the original vive? is the tracking on the oculus bad at all, or does it work fine? not having used a VR headset at all to compare each one to, i won't be  "used" to one or the other either.

I do get paid on tuesday, and want to get started right away to play with my friends on VRchat and such.

I personally have the RIft S and love it. Zero issues with tracking.

is it only the USB and displayport cable? the tracking is all done without sensors being mounted on my wall and such?

Sensors are built into the headset itself, no external sensors or light houses required. It is only the USB and Display port cable.

oh awesome, if there  is no problem with the tracking i could just get the rift s then unless something is on sale for about 500. i really have no comparison between the rift s and anything else, so it isn't like i am used to something else that might throw me off. Does the oculus have it's own store or can i use steamvr?

it does have its own store, but is also compatible with almost the full collection of steam VR library as well.

I have Beat Saber on SteamVR and it works like a dream. Cant confirm with the Doctor Who game. Most games will list on it if its compatible with the Oculus Rift on the steam page.

oh ok i see, it says supports htc vive and oculus rift, i would say it would be safe to assume i can use the rift s as it is still a "rift"?

Does your monitor support HDMI as well?

You may want to look at switching your monitor output to HDMI or using an active HDMI to DisplayPort adapter for your monitor as their are times when you're going to need to run both the rift and monitor at the same time and plugging/unplugging is going to get annoying really quick.

I have the original Oculus and just tried the Rift S for the first time. The tracking on the S is fine, the lenses are definitely better, the "screen door effect" is reduced due to a different subpixel layout. The S also accommodates eyeglasses much batter and due to the headband design feels a bit more balanced. That being said, the original Oculus has MUCH better speakers built in.
