Hi everyone, i recently got a rtx 2070 super to replace my 1070, but my performance stayed almost identical.

From the tests ive made, im suspecting my i7 6700 (non k) is holding my card back quite a bit in newer titles. I was wondering what cpu would be a good upgrade from the 6700, without costing too much. Note that i will have to swap the mobo regardless if im going with amd or intel, my ram is 2x8 gb 2133mhz kit. Thanks!

I'd upgrade to around 3600mhz DDR4 - would be significant rise of fps in any game.

My mobo is quite old, i fear it wont hold 3600 mhz ram very well. Regardless, how much of a boost will i see with faster ram on 6th gen intel cpu? I was under the imperssion intel cpus care less for higher speed ram than amd ones.

The amount of performance gained on Intel platform might not be so dramatic as on AMD Zen(2) platform, but it is significant. Anyway you'd have to get new RAM if planning to upgrade platform ... imo. Upgrading to Intel path is not making sense now, before 10000-series CPU-s from Intel.

RAM is the cheapest upgrade path to start.

I was considering just starting with ram. Though, i still fear my mobo wont use the ram like it should. If my mobo products page states up to 2400mhz support, is there any reason the ram wont work at higher speed? Or if it really wont be able to run at advertised speed, will it at least run at 2133 or 2400 until i upgrade my mobo? Thanks for the help

If that's no secret - what mobo are we talking about?

And If buying faster RAM it's always possible to downclock if some compatibility issues arise, probably.

Ok, I'd wait for Intel desktop 10000 series CPUs in the 1Q 2020, before going to the best choice now - Ryzen 7 3K series option.

Thats my opinion of the CPU market situation, they might not be so good after all..

Changing only motherboard would give possibly a performance boost too (Z270 chipset)

Tbh, after intel's questionable pricing this time, i was leaning towards the 3600/3700x. I do care about how long the cpu would hold, which had me thinking about the 3900x. If the pricing of intel would be more reasonable, i might reconsider. Still wondering for how long 8 cores would be enough, Or in other words, how much of an overkill 12 cores are for purely gaming?

Right now there's not much point above 6c/12t  CPUs for gaming. But possibly in 2020 it will change ... not possibly but rather certainly.

If you got the finances 3900x should be a good investment for years to come.

Got that, thank you very much for the advice!
