Yes of course you can!

If the display is HDR you can see movies SDR with HDR effect.

no no no guys.... I have a HDR tv but is rubbish so if I buy 4k movies are they HDR or SDR on disc? Can I play them for now in SDR and when I upgrade my tv will I be able to play HDR from the same disc?

Yes. As long as the disc supports HDR, it will display in SDR if the TV is not compatible for whatever reason.

Hi thanks for clarifying. Will this apply to any 4k move that is out now? IF the movie is 10bit those that mean is HDR or should I look for it to specifically say HDR?

I would really be surprised if a movie said 10-bit without advertising HDR at the same time... I would look for HDR. You're going to drive yourself crazy if you seek the features each movie is mastered with.

If you really want some honesty, don't worry if the box says HDR at all as it adds absolutely nothing to the experience... and don't spend too much money on physical media at this point. Save it for when the 4k/HDR content costs more on streaming services (oh wait? Netflix...)

I have over 800 bluray and I'm staring collecting 4k as for streaming services I'm not a fan. Paying for content that is not mine and can disappear or change at any time. Disney Plus is not available in UK that is a joke.

I hear you. I read an article that D+ is coming to UK by April 2020. It's by far the best streaming quality compared to the junk Netflix delivers. It's worth the wait. They still don't have Atmos. Everything in the streaming world is stuck at 6 channels for now. How hard can it be to provide two more channels of audio? Can't wait for that to be added to a separate premium package for HD audio streamers. Service, Service+ for UHD video, and Service++ for high quality audio. Netflix $100 per month. D+ $99 triple play package - FEED THE MOUSE! All included on the disc. You are part of a very niche group of 4k collectors. You will be burnt I'm sorry to say.
