You should be fine. Macs love using ram as cache, main reason why its so fast even on hard drives.

My new laptop has a total of 8GB of memory and under "typical" usage will use every single megabyte. I can't see any degradation in performance or responsiveness but I'm wondering if I should be a little more conservative with my memory.

My System Specs: (Short list) i7 4770k, GTX 780, many SSD's, a 2 TB HDD(deceased :( ), Corsair 650D. Full list: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/kchriz6097/saved/8dh7YJ

Upgrade Plan: Acquire some Black Noctuas then add 16 or 32GB of 2133MHz memory

what laptop? it is very unusual that your laptop would use every last bit of memory under normal usage. What do you define as typical usage? I have a hard time using up the 8 gigabytes of memory on my desktop on games and some cad programs

What do you have running? Right now I'm using about 40% of my 1GB, with 2 tabs open and about 150-200MB in the swap...

I think that MAC's keep everything running in the background. But, I am not sure case I don't have one

I wonder If mac os uses any leftover memory as a cache.

Virtual memory is just cache on your hdd and not your actual ram. It's nothing to worry about.

Sorry for the late response, I ran the battery dry and left it charging to watch The Walking Dead. I checked it and it is indeed running mavericks.
