Ugrading pc past Xbox series X specs?

CuriousBro

I'm trying to plan my next upgrade in 2020 to outperform the Xbox series X, but have too many questions. My monitor is 1920x1080. Is upgrading to a 4K monitor needed? And what would I need to upgrade to beat the Xbox series X? Would I need to replace motherboard, cpu, and gpu? Or simply the GPU? So many questions and not enough answers. My build is on my profile. Edit, or

What are your recommendations?

Couldn't be bothered to copy-paste your build here?

To be honest it's probably pretty close to the series X already. Do you have a budget in mind for upgrades?

400$ for used GPU and CPU. But again, I really don't know if a 4k monitor will be required.

Considering the Xbox Series X is said to have an RDNA 2 GPU, which supports ray tracing and variable rate shading, you're going to need at the minimum a Turing based GPU, unless you can wait for an RDNA 2 GPU. Variable rate shading support is likely more key than ray tracing, because if games use that, you're never going to get the same level of performance using a GPU that doesn't support it unless you use an overpowered one.

Also, we don't know the final specs of the GPU. It could be as good as whatever will be in the $400 GPU range or as good as the $200 GPU range.

I deinitely wouldn't get a 4k monitor, maybe upgrade to 1440p or 144Hz depending on what kind of games you play. For $400 you won't be able to play at 4k.

As for upgrade, you could either spend it on a CPU/mobo upgrade such as a 3600 and good b450 board, or a gpu upgrade such as a 1080ti, 2070super or 5700xt. I'm not sure what used prices are like in your region, but those cards would be a good upgrade.

If you really want to "beat" the Xbox Series X you'll need:

-4K monitor

-RTX 2080 Super

-Ryzen 9 3900X

-32GB of RAM

But the real question is, why you wanna "beat" the Xbox Series X you're not happy with your gaming experience right now?

Actually, that is part of this. I don't know what I would want. I'm satisfied, but feel by the end of 2020 I might feel otherwise. Mostly poking around this topic right now.

Save your money and wait until your PC doesn't fit your needs anymore. Then you'll have to choose between upgrading your PC or building a new one. Usually people upgrade their PC at least one time before building a new one.

X series specs aren't out yet, kinda hard to comment on specifics, but the monitor question truly puzzles me.

Either way, the 1070 is probably (speculation) not going to outperform whatever ends up going in the new Xbox, and for 600 bucks? Bad value. (amazon has 2080 supers for $675)

Then again, going with an RTX card, the processor is probably going to bottleneck it. I'd suggest getting a 5700XT for (a lot) less money and better overall performance than a 1070.

That intel SSD for 190 dollars for (am i reading this right!?) is absolutely ridiculous. 120GB? you can get a 500GB for literally a third of that price. WD blue just to name one.

Your mobo also has an M.2 slot, why not use an M.2 SSD, Im using one thats 1TB,  (kingston A2000) that's 4 times as fast and 120 bucks.

Edit: Oh right, the monitor thing. To be frank, I'd suggest getting 1440P/144 and put that 4K money towards a higher CPU budget.

Lol, it's only so you could see my specs. I bought that 120g in 2014 for 74$, and the 500g in 2019 for 74$. Thanks all for the feedback. It really helps with the planning.
