upgrading HTPC - just graphics card or full system?

Kalm_Traveler

Hi guys, just toying around with the idea of upgrading my HTPC now because everything else has been upgraded to the moon and for some reason having an i5 9400 in the pfsense mini pc makes me feel like the 7700 (non-k) + Geforce GTX 1070 in the HTPC could use an upgrade.

current HTPC specs

case: Fractal Design Node 202

mb: Asus ROG Strix Z270-I gaming

cpu: i7 7700 (non-k, but delidded + liquid metal to help with temps)
ram: 16gb (2 x 8gb) Corsair Vengeance LPX 2666mhz I believe CL14

graphics card: MSI Geforce GTX 1070 Gaming X

ssd: 512gb Samsung 950 Pro nvme
PSU: Corsair 600w SFX

TV: Samsung Q55R 4k QLED

It all works great, but since I just picked up a 4k HDR TV, kinda wanted to beef it up a bit. To be honest, gaming-wise it is mostly used by my buddy for WoW retail and that seems to actually still run just fine even on 4k with everything max except shadows, but I'd like to be able to play Witcher 3, Jedi Fallen Order etc that sort of game (games that lend themselves to a controller) with everything max and maintaining 60 fps since that's the TV's refresh rate. For some reason Windows doesn't recognize the TV as HDR capable, but I'm not sure if that's due to the 1070 or something else. Everything going into the TV runs through a receiver, and I have the single TV input being used set for HDR being enabled (Samsung has a setting called something like Input Plus or somesuch that you have to enable per input) and using a 4k HDR blu ray player it does seem to function on the TV.

Do you guys think simply swapping the 1070 for say a 2070 Super would do the trick? or should I look at upgrading the entire platform? Since my normal PC habits are 'how much money can I waste for bleeding edge performance?' I'm kind of lost when it comes to normal build parts choosing, so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

I should think a 2070S would be a decent upgrade for you.

You still have a pretty solid build there but if you really want to then yeah upgrade the GPU.

Main PC CPU: 7700K, MOBO: Asus Strix, GPU: Aorus Extreme 3080, PSU: EVGA Supernova G2 750, RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB Storage: 970 Evo 1tb

Lounge PC CPU: 4790K MOBO: Asus Hero VII GPU: EVGA 3060 Ti PSU: Corsair RM650 RAM: Kingston HyperX 16gb Storage: 970 Evo 1TB

Like what everyone else has replied so far, your current setup is still good. You might just want to upgrade the GPU at this point. A 2070 Super would be a nice bump.
