Performance Issues.

I'm kind of a gamer, not playing all the top triple A games, but I play games like Minecraft, Fortnite, etc. Right now, I have two computers, one that is a recent budget build, and another that is around 5-7 years old, also, I just added a gt 710 into the older one. As of now, I'm mostly playing Minecraft, and as I switch between the two, I notice that my oldest computer performs better than my newer one. I'll list the specs of each below.

 

New

Ryzen 3 2200G

ddr4 8 gb 2666 mhz

Rx 570

No overclock on anything.

 

Old

Intel i3-550

ddr3 8 gb 1333 mhz

gt 710

No overclocks.

 

 

I'm not the biggest geek on computer stuff, but I do know some.

I was thinking that minecraft just performed better on Intel/ Nvidia. But, I'm also thinking that the ram on the newest computer just isn't fast enough, and it's hindering the full potential.

Any insight will help me figure this thing out. I'll answer any questions. Thanks.

Are you sure you are running the RAM at 2666 mhz? Check in the BIOS to see if it's running at 2666 or it might just be running at 2133. Also check and make sure you are plugging into the GPU and not the Motherboard. It will be running off of the integrated graphics of the CPU if that's the case. And make sure you double-check the power connectors to the GPU are completely plugged in.

 

Also, is the 8GB of RAM in your new PC one or two sticks? Same question for the old PC. If the old PC had two sticks while the new PC has one stick, that would cause a significant difference to performance as RAM running on single channel won't run as fast as dual channel.  That wouldn't completely explain why the old PC would run better than the new PC, but it is a factor which will show.

Are you sure that the monitor is plugged into the GPU on the new build and not the motherboard? Also, check Task Manager while Minecraft is running and monitor the CPU and GPU graphs to see if the CPU or GPU is the limiting factor.

is the ram 1 stick or 2, zen needs fast ram, dual channel, or it runs slower than sandy bridge.

 

you want 2 sticks running at ~3000mhz, confirmed in bios and windows

So I have two sticks of ram, both are 4gb. Other older one also has 2 sticks. I have checked its mhz in the Bios, and it says its 2666 mhz. Also, it is only plugged into the GPU.

I don't know how to overclock my ram to 3000 mhz, last time I tried, I stayed at 2666. Wasn't sure if I need to change timings or what, but I don't know how to do that.

 

Anymore questions for any ambiguity will be answered, but I apologize if it's late.

Both are usually at about 30% utilization, according to in game tests. The picture is from the Msi Afterburner

Is V-Sync enabled? If so, disable it. Set the Max FPS to Unlimited as well.

Check VRAM utilization of the GPU, likely you need to disabled the intigrated graphics, any sli/crossfire thing, and make sure PCI is primary driver for graphics in the BIOS. 

Minecraft won't stress GPUs much, you could download Superposition benchmark (its free) and see if it can run on "1080p Extreme" which should utilze 3gb+ of vram. With the MSI Afterburner+RTSS overlay that you have this should make it possible to check utilization and give yourself a idea how computer is running now, vs after if you change anything. 


Since intel ships most their CPUs with integrated graphics the BIOS on them is usually smarter about automatically disabled iGPU once a GPU is installed, but since AMD only sells a handful of CPUs with intigrated graphics, all for either budget builds or mobile market, most of the BIOS aren't intelligent with how they handle things once a discrete GPU is installed so often have to be properly configured to only use the discrete GPU, never the iGPU, on the users end.
