Hi All,

I have been given an old server that has 6TB drives and a 240GB SSD, with 24GB DDR3 1600Mhz memory. The issue is the CPU.

At the moment its running I5 2600 Skt 1155 CPU, i was looking at changing to I7 3770K.

What are your thoughts on this legacy CPU?  I have read some good things and some bad things about it. Bearing in mind that this is going to be a gaming rig, would you go for this processor?

Any help CPU suggestions would be gratefully received.

Cheers...

I wouldnt get an unlocked CPU for OEM boards. Those things already lack decent PSUs and motherboards. 3770 or a ivy bridge Xeon is what I would suggest.

The problem with Ivy Bridge is that the IHS isn't soldered, while with Sandy Bridge the IHS is soldered.

I am very well aware, I own a 3570K. lul. At stock speeds it doesnt make a difference as you wont be needing temperature headroom.

The 3770k will still game for now if you can get a good overclock out of it.  It’s 4/8.  How much longer it will do that though is unknown.  Possibly not long.  If it’s the best you can do it’s the best you can do though. There are new $100 CPUs out now that can beat it.  They will require a new mobo and ram though. A lot of it is going to be how much does the cpu cost and is the money better spent on a new system (which would also require even more money)

@Levent mentions above though that getting a good overclock out of it though may not be possible.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

i5 2500 or i7 2600?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Well it’s gonna be limited no mater what. So it shouldn’t matter which you get.

Assuming you mean cooling being a factor putting it in this section.

Stock cooler is more than enough for it.

It’s ok for gaming if you aren’t exceeding its expectations.

Had mine overclocked at 4.5 but the games I played were cpu intensive so it could barley get buy given how these new games are
