Hi guys,

I am planning to build my first PC. This PC will act as my workstation (I will use it for 3D rendering and editing software) but will also function as a gaming pc. I would like to be able to play all my games at 1080p at high settings. Games that I play include Arma 3, Squad, Battlefield 4&5 and Planetside 2. I would also like to be able to run some newer games in case I get into them. Since I am from Germany, my budget on this PC will be in euros and at about 600 EUR. I am happy to go slightly above this, but since I will also have to buy a suitable monitor I really do not want to get very close to the 700 EUR mark. This is my build:

AMD Ryzen 5 2600X 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor

ASRock B450M-HDV R4.0 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard

Patriot Viper Elite 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-2666 Memory

Western Digital Blue 500 GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive

Zotac GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER 4 GB Twin Fan Video Card

Cooler Master MasterBox Q300L MicroATX Mini Tower Case

be quiet! System Power 9 500 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply

two times: ARCTIC Arctic F12 74 CFM 120 mm Fan

Total Price: €624.53

I am generally quite happy with this build but still wanted to ask whether I can get something better for what I want to do at a similar price point. A lot of people have been talking about the new GTX 1660 Super as being a significantly better investment and bang for the buck. But I do not know where I would save some money to make the extra 90 EUR blow a bit more manageable.

So, what do you guys think?

I was thinking about using a Ryzen 2600 instead of the 2600x and using a cheaper power supply with a lower wattage from a less reputable brand but still the 80+ bronze rating to make back some money. But would the worse CPU hurt me much when doing CAD work?

TLDNR If you got to cut, cut the cpu not the PSU.

There is very little difference between the 2600 and 2600x. The latter is binned a tic higher and has a better stock cooler.  It’s single core performance will be just a twitch higher.

im more worried about the PSU choice.  Lower end PSUs don’t last as long and they have an increased chance of blowing out your system.  That’s already a pretty cheap PSU though.  I’m not sure you could get lower and not get into the real back alley stuff.

part of the problem is while this is a very low wattage machine, decent PSUs just don’t get a lot smaller, and even if you went with a back alley lowballer you’d still only be saving about 20 pounds.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Do you think that the ryzen 5 2600 will be able to run well as a workstation CPU for CAD?
