I have a older Dell poweredge t710 I was wondering what would I need to do in order to get it up an running as a home media server

First you need to know what content it needs to serve. If you want 4K HEVC media, you'll need to buy a graphics card, like a GTX1050/1650/Quadro P2000

to achieve that the cheapest way possible.

It'll also determine if you need a beefy CPU or not since software transcoding results in better image quality, albeit slower and hard on CPUs.

Once you've determined that, you need to buy the appropriate parts, harddisks, RAM, CPU etc. and then configure the software side of things.

FreeNAS, Ubuntu Server. Windows anything is possible.

PC Specs - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B550M Mortar - 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4-3600 @ CL16 - ASRock RX7800XT 660p 1TBGB & Crucial P5 1TB Fractal Define Mini C CM V750v2 - Windows 11 Pro

I'm pretty sure it has all that already in it maybe not the GPU but it's got 2 CPUs and plenty of RAM
