Long time lurker here finally breaking down.

I am hoping to make a home server to handle a number of tasks and i am not sure how much performance i am going to need to run the services i am hoping to set up. Looking for some guidance.

Aiming to run an Unraid server that will act as a NAS, Pi-Hole, Media Server, host Open VPN for remote access to the the NAS storage and possibly run a 7 days to die private server for my kids (possible other games but not at the same time). At any given point i am not expecting more than two devices to be streaming 1080p media, but that would be concurrent with accessing files on the NAS.

Ive been looking at refurb servers (dell and HP) as well as PCpartpicker to just build something on a older ryzen. Should i be looking for more cores? more ram? faster clocks for this kind of setup. budget is flexible but caps around 2k. Let me know if you guys have any input. Thanks!

If you plan to run a large number of virtual machines you'll want more cores & more RAM. Core speed naturally decreases in the server space with increased cores but if you can find a good deal on a higher than average clocked Xeon then go for it.
