CPU Overclock Worth It For Gaming?

I have a:

Gigabyte x-99 5p 

i7 5960x

AX1200i power supply

2 980ti GPU's (currently running the one that took a further OC, and I'm learning I don't play much that takes advantage of SLI). Typically only play Apex Legends and BF5 at the moment. Just bought a new CPU cooler and after learning about and overclocking the gpu I've since gone up about 10-12 frames in BF5 with 1440 low graphics. Will overclocking the CPU help this further? Is there even any point for what I primarily do? I keep seeing free performance boost, but is that applicable here?

it will. depending on the cpu (not familiar with CPU architecures UwU) 

 

faster CPU = higher FPS.

 

you can see that in a comparison between a non overclocked CPU and an overcloked CPU especially if you plan to exceed 60 fps or reach 144 

Im with the mentaility of "IF IM NOT SURE IF ITS ENOUGH COOLING, GO OVERKILL"

In regards to battlefield, i went from 58-62 frames to mid high 70s. I have a reasonably decent benq 144hz monitor. And the more im learning the more im trying to achieve lol. Just keep reading mixed things from all sorts of time periods for and against it doing anything. Would love to stretch the most of what i have until i try to upgrade both cpu and gpu in a few months.

You can see CPU usage per core with HWinfo64. If they arent maxing out or near maxing out (80%+) you're likely not CPU bottlenecked and OC wont help. Could try memory OCthough

Depends on game, gpu, settings, and display.

 

It's mostly free though so no reason not to if you can

@Jurrunio I will have to download that program and take a look. Still relatively new to PC and all it's fun. I was experiencing stuttering with my games but I think that might've been from a no longer working H100i AIO. I've since replaced with an air cooler and haven't noticed any issues since. Oh, I meant sensor mode of Hwinfo64. If you dont have a second monitor you could use RTSS to display data (select in Hwinfo64, or even MSI Afterburner) as an overlay on top of the game screen

@JurrunioLooking up RTSS currently lol. Jealous of your knowledge. Also hwinfo is telling me there is an update but I have no idea which link to click once i hit update. Do I need to have a game opened for the sensor portion to be viable info wise? 

 

Edit: Pretty sure I downloaded Afterburner without getting the RIvatuner as at the time I didn't know what it was. Should I uninstall MSI then redownload choosing both? If so, do I need to re overclock my gpu?

dont have to update HWinfo tbh, they dont affect use with older systems like yours or even mine. Sensors can be seen as a separate window independently, but without running the game you can't check whether the CPU's the bottleneck.

@JurrunioPic is while running Apex Legends with med-high 1440 settings, no idea how to get rtss to show me on screen stats during  gameplay, trying some things and cannot figure it out for the life of me

Below is in game, I saw a spike of some hitting high 60's and upwards of 71-73,

You mentioned my memory, would that be my ddr4? I don’t have any issues gaming just wondering if its possible to push more performance out of my set up besides the gpu overclock

Yes. X99 has problems with high memory frequency (beyond 3200MHz) but I think you're using 2400MHz?

Oc made a world of difference in bf1 and bfv being so cpu intensive. Couldn’t imagine if I still ran two cards. 

I tend to push my cpu’s pretty high. Like the last cod game, mine would sit at 90%+ on each core. Would take a large dip if running at stock speeds. 

 

If you have the cooling, there’s not reason not to push the cpu as far as it could go. Give it a chance against two cards and a game like that.

@Mick NaughtyYea i dont believe im utilizing or atleast was utilizing both cards. I kept reading that SLI for battlefield was disabled so I wasnt sure if there was any point in running it or trying to. And i really don’t believe Apex utilizes it either but im not sure. Since ive taken the bridge off and just oc’d each card individually

 

and @Jurrunio ill have to double check my ddr4 when i got back home tonight after work

My memory is Corsair dominator platinum ddr4 and the sticks says 2666MHz. I believe i have 32gb

maybe enable XMP and set it to run 2666MHz?

So i went to do xmp on my system. There was an nvidia update last night so i ran and installed. Today i get home from work and apply the lighter of the two xmp profiles. My computer failed to boot and i selected load optimized defaults And reboot and now my computer boots without reading my graphics card and only shows cpu for afterburner. Display works if plugged into one gpu but not the one i was using. And keeps having to force reinstall graphics drivers and telling me to “restart to apply these changes”. This is on an endless loop. Not at all sure what to do
