So my family owns alot of dvds which we like to watch from time to time but the shelves we have them on are out of order so its really hard to find anything from them. So i had an idea. Would it be possible to create some sort of system in google sheets that automatically puts everything in alphabetical order and assings it a letter corresponding to its proper shelf. I would assing all the shelves letters on my own and like physically do all the sorting stuff. But this would be used in the future when ever we get new stuff then you just input the name and you know where to take it

You can sort A - Z easily in Google Sheets, just right click on the column and press that button.

It would be pretty do-able to make a sorting function too, just depends on how you sort.

For example, if all your shelves will fit 10 DVD's per hole, and it has 6 holes top to bottom and however many in width, you can assign a letter to each column of the shelves and a number to each row and have Google Sheets figure out the correct hole in the cabinet.

What I kind of mean:

If you set up your cabinets like this, you only have to let Google Sheets figure out what cabinet and what column/row the DVD will belong in. Then you just walk to your cabinets with for example "B3" and you know that is the middle hole and it's one of those 10 DVD's.

The only disadvantage of this would be:

1. Once you have all your DVD's and get a movie starting with a low letter in the alphabet (e.g. that starts with 'A') you would need to move quite a few DVD's 'forward' to have it fit

2. You would need to rely on people placing it back properly.

A fix to this would be to make some different shelves; action, comedy, romance, etc. so you have less sorting to do there.

What code you should exactly use depends on your implementation of your cabinets..
