So, it has been a while since I build my very first custom PC and now I want to upgrade it. A small disclaimer: I'm not a hardcore gamer and I'm ok with not having top-notch hardware.

This is my current build:

  • Case: Thermaltake H34
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-6400
  • Cooler: T4
  • Motherboard: B150m
  • Memory: HyperX DDR4 8GB (2x)
  • GPU: GTX 1070 Giga Byte G1 Gamming 8GB
  • PSU: XFX 650W TS 80 Gold

I'm leaning towards updating my CPU first and possibly get more RAM. I would only get a new motherboard if that's ultimately necessary, otherwise, I would probably keep this one as motherboards are pricey in Brazil.

Which CPU would be a good fit for this build? Should I get 2 more HyperX DDR4 8GB? I'm terrified of compatibility issues.

By the way, I've asked specifically about CPU and memory but I'm open to suggestions! :)

Thanks in advance.

Watch out for a B450 + R7 2700 deal for sub $200 come Black Friday. I'm almost certain they'll be around.

Last year was X370 + R5 1600/R7 1700 for $149.

Reuse your ram and/or add another $60 for a decent 16gb kit.

The only good CPUs for that motherboard are the i7 6700/7700, and I highly doubt you'd get good prices on those.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I need?

Those are quite expensive indeed but it's good to know they would fit my build. What other motherboard + CPU combo would you recommend?
