Hello everyone!

First of all, I am upgrading CPU of an existing rig.

My current rig is: https://valid.x86.fr/ml3qyb
(Basically i7-7800X @ 5GHz, 64GB, Quadro P2000 if you don't wanna click)

My choice are:

i9-10900X (3.7GHz base / 4.3GHz All core boost / 4.7GHz Single core boost) 10 Core, 20 Thread

i9-10920X (3.5GHz base / 4.3GHz All core boost / 4.8GHz Single core boost) 12 Core, 24 Thread

i9-10940X (3.3GHz base / 4.1GHz All core boost / 4.8GHz Single core boost) 14 Core, 28 Thread

My main usage of this PC is Photoshop and After Effect. They both strongly prefer single thread performance.

However, I do use quite a bit of Premiere Pro which prefers multi thread performance.

I do like the higher base clock of 10900X but I feel like it's a poorly binned CPU because of it's low boost clock.

It's so weird how highest base clock has the lowest boost clock, even with the lowest core count.

I like the core numbers of 10940X but all core boost is kinda low. I also don't really benefit from all those cores for my main use case.

10920X is what I personally think is the best CPU for me because of highest clock and decent core count.

However, I wanted some feedback from the community before I commit to a CPU because it is about $1000 (at least when you convert to Canadian $ T-T).

Side note:

I have tested Ryzen 3600X (and 2700X) and for some reason my 7800X was always significantly faster. (For my usage)

I don't know if this is because of AVX-512 or Quad Channel RAM or other reasons...

But something about what I do prefers intel HEDT. (sadly... like really sadly.....)

Also it's sample size of 1 so take it with a grain of salt....

What about Skylake and Skylake-X refresh parts with more cores?

tho you shouldnt think of it now since we havent seen proper prices from retailers yet.

There are probably some deals on used CPUs on eBay for your motherboard, hell maybe you can snag a 7980XE

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

So Gamer's Nexus has a whole pile of tests, including several Intel HEDT chips of varying core-counts in their 3950X review:

One thing that did jump out at me, looking for the Photoshop results are, you might consider a 9900KS, if you can tolerate longer times in Premier Pro.

What is your Passmark Single thread score for your I7-7800X? I just saw that you're running that thing at an all-cores 5.0 Ghz+. I'm not familiar with the architectural differences between Skylake-X and Coffee Lake, but I'm fairly given to understand that they're not going to have much difference in pure IPC. If that is the case, you may already have the best chip you're likely to get until either Intel released HEDT 10um products, or AMD starts producing 5Ghz Zen2+ chips. Basically, if you're scoring around a 3,000 single thread passmark score, don't bother upgrading the CPU for this generation.

That CPU has terrible single thread performance. I didn't even include 10980XE.

Passmark is kinda irrelevant for my use but I think I would be around 2700-2800 single thread.
9900K (not even KS) destroys my 7800X in photoshop for things I do.

But for some reason After Effect sucks on everything except Intel HEDT for my use....

This really sucks cuz I honestly think intel HEDT pricing is stupid.
