I dont think compiling code takes this many cores

If I did go with the Ryzen 9 3950x, what would be the best motherboard?

depends on feature set you want on such board. As far as power delivery's concerned

Is there a best option? I want something that isn't crazy hard to put together but that looks cool and will last and provides good air flow. Cost isn't a big deal for me.

Aesthetics is subjective

Good airflow = goodbye sealed solid front panels like the NZXT H510. Mesh front or not, is up to personal taste even tho they do give better airflow.

fps chase?

Mostly fps like cs:go, call of duty and games like that. Not necessarily an fps chaser, but definitely want a top notch experience. I'm not a huge gamer, just kind of getting into it. Sadly most of my gaming has been on mobile (iPad Pro), which is why I'm looking to build.

If you think it's overkill what would you recommend as a best all around?

then dont spend too much money

$1200-$1500 go for 1000-1200 if you can

For the whole rig? That would be pretty tough, no?

He wants to do video editing as well.  And if it's for his job, you want the best available as time is money.

Still, 3950X is too expensive. No one said he's making money out of video editing either.

Here's something I quick threw together.  I'm sure someone can critique it and give some better optimizations as far as parts combinations.  Just add about $200 for the 3950x, cause it's not listed on PPP yet.

Hey,

I'm looking to build my first pc. I'm a web developer, so usually using a Mac for work, but I'm looking to set up this machine for gaming and also be able to do some video editing. Who knows, it could even become my main machine for development if I can get myself used to working in Windows.

The Ryzen 3950x has my curiosity really peaked, but honestly I don't know much about what components work best together. I was hoping you all might have some recommended builds for me. I haven't committed to Intel or AMD yet, so I am open to hearing the case for either. If I did go with the Ryzen 9 3950x, what would be the best motherboard? Also, I can't seem to figure out the best case to buy, every time I get close to ordering one, I hear some reason as to why it's a bad choice. Is there a best option? I want something that isn't crazy hard to put together but that looks cool and will last and provides good air flow. Cost isn't a big deal for me.

Thanks

How much money do you want to spend?

I think $1200 - $1500 should be okay

Also, I think an 8-core will be fine, unless you use heavy video editing.

3k is what I'd like to keep it under, but if there was a big reason to spend more I could.

I do a fair amount of web conferencing and also record tutorials with Screenflow, which tends to eat a bunch of ram and cpu when rendering.

Do you use many effects and do smooth do you want scrubbing? (1/2 1/4 1/8 etc)

And also at what res do you want to play games, at what settings and at what framerate. (For res I’d probably stick to 1440P and framerate at your budget maybe 90+ fps.

I don't particularly care about noise, I live by myself. As long as it isn't like to an annoying level. I'm not doing a ton of effects, but do scrub video when I'm chopping stuff up.

Here’s something:

Also paired it with a monitor
