You mean in boot time? Depends on what the external SSD is connected with. From what I remember only USB3.1 Gen2 is comparable or better than SATA3. If you're talking about an NVMe SSD then Thunderbolt is probablly the only way. USB3.0 and lower will be slower most likely.
