Samsung M.2 Differences

So I was browsing SSD options for a PC upgrade that I'm planning for this December and I realized that there are so many Samsung NVMe M.2 drive models with varying prices but I'm not sure what're the differences with all of them and I'm not sure how to find out what's best for me.

 

Drives:

Currently have

- Samsung 960 Pro 512GB for OS, software, some files in Documents and Downloads, and a few important games.

- Seagate BarraCuda Pro 7200RPM 4TB for everything else (mostly games).

- Toshiba 7200RPM 1TB 2.5" that I got from my old Alienware laptop for storing movies and tv shows for Plex streaming.

 

1) I want to get another NVMe M.2 drive most likely from Samsung and I want to know the difference between the

- Samsung 960 Pro

- Samsung 970 Pro

- Samsung 960 Evo

- Samsung 970 Evo

- Samsung 970 Evo Plus

 

2) where the WD_BLACK SN750 NVMe SSD stands

 

3) a good M.2 heatsink

960 is old and iirc they run a lot hotter.

You probably don't need a Pro drive.

I'd just get the Evo. Save the money. Though even then, there are cheaper options out there.

so 970 is the newer line of samsung m.2, and what's the difference between the pro, evo, and plus? Thanks for the quick reply

The Pro uses 2 bit instead of 3 bit MLC flash and is ever-so-slightly more efficient.

The Evo Plus is slightly faster than the Evo.

But, really, you won't notice any difference in day to day use unless you do a lot of writing.

what use cases would benefit from which drives?

and how does the wd_black compare to the samsung drives?

lastly, which would be the best for gaming and vr games?

You won't really notice a difference.
