Photo storage/gallery options

I've been bouncing around ever since Google changed Picasa to Google Photos and ruined it. I'm looking for personal online photo storage with maybe 15-20gigs worth and I'm willing to pay under $50/year for it. Not going back to Photobucket, and current service Irista is closing.

So the question is, what is good for amateur just looking safe place to use for sharing etc. With roll/gallery style presentation, something I can send link out and people can just view it. Maybe download too. And something which has line "we don't use your photos without your permission" in their ToS.

  • Go back to what currently is Google Photos and upgrade to G Suite (already running out of space with Drive and Gmail)?
  • Go for Flickr Pro (as I'm 670/1000 with some travel photos)?
  • Something else?

As you have already discovered, cloud data storage has a host of problems, including the ones you mentioned. I suggest that, instead of storing them online, use your own external drives (in the long run, this can less expensive, especially for large volumes). To be reasonably safe, data must exist in at least three sepaeate places. For most people, this would be on a computer, on an onsite external backup drive, and on an offsite external backup drive. For a drive to be a backup drive, it must be kept powered down, disconnected from the computer, and stored out of sight of the computer except when updating the backup.

If you prefer not to have the photos on a computer for whatever reason (and there can be perfectly good reasons for it), you can keep it on an external drive. That drive won't need to be kept powered down or dsconnected from the computer but will still need to have an onsite backup and an offsite backup. You could use a NAS but, depending on the total volume of data you have, could create some "interesting" problems for making and maintaining backups (yes, even a NAS needs to be backed up).

For long term cold storage, HDDs are best (this coming from the flatulent geriatric who uses only SSDs!). They still will need to be "exercised" (powered up and read) once or twice a year to help keep bearing lube from hardening and data becoming corrupted.

One has to be proactive, not reactive, to ensure the safety of one's data so backup your data! And RAID is NOT a backup!

You've misunderstood my question here. I have external HDD for backups already. I have NAS backup solution in mind for future when I have money to buy/build such. I'm not looking for backup options per say (but am open to suggestions for that too). I'm looking for gallery site which I can have better control and privacy options than what FB/Instagram offer (and Google). I don't need to share my whole 50gigs of photos. Just some travels photos, cat photos, hardware photos etc.

Yep, I totally missed it. Sorry about that. I still recommend more than one backup, though. It doesn't matter what the subject matter of the photos is--even cat photos, pictures of meals you ate, porn, whatever), if they are important to you, then they are worth backing up properly. I don't recommend a NAS, especially for only 50GB, unless you need the data to be available to more than one computer on your network at all times.

50GB is a drop in the bucket (a really big one) with the storage available today so I'm not underatanding why you want to keep it in the cloud.

Backup would be for other things too, ofc. 50gb is size of my pictures main folder. Everything just on my own PC is about 500gb (documents, save/cofig files, videos, photos, music).

And as for pics, I'm mainly looking for sharing option which isn't Facebook or Instagram (of which one you lose "copyright" and other the original quality/aspect ratio). If you want example, I'm looking something to use for show/share stuff. I could use FB, but at one point they had something in ToS about them using any pics uploaded for marketing if they so decided. So I rather use something where I have full control, and I'm willing to pay for it.

I can do another search, like I did last time. But if someone has something good in mind, like Flickr or 500px, I can take another look at them too.

Ok, I get it now. I don't use anything like that so I can't recommend anything (short of setting up your own domain and website, which is not exactly inexpensive; if interested, you might check out someplace like GoDaddy). Sorry.

I trust Farcebook (and other social media sites) as far as I can spit upwind in a class 5 hurricane.
