Just pair via bluetooth or use a USB cable.

Be warned, there is a bug with ps4 contoller pairing with recent kernels, so try out a lts kernel if bluetooth doesn't work.

Got a longitech wired controller, worked right out of the box on steam and steam games. I even use it to play Pokemon sun and moon on citra emulator.

Steam handles it OOTB. Even changed the light bar to my favorite color. I had to plug it in the first time but worked flawlessly after that.

It works out the box, depends how you are handling input, for hidraw you may need to install the steam-devices package, for steam games using X.org input you may just need libinput
