You can set up your own hosting on your computer to host a website, however this is not recommended. Not only does it mean your computer must be on 24/7, it also means your bandwidth is used up, and any internet issues will take your site down. Also, most ISPs specifically disallow the running of servers on residental connections.

Go register yoursel for free hosting like at http://www.1freehosting.com/ and then upload your HTML/PHP/MySQL etc there!

If you're just looking to set up a server locally for development purposes, may I suggest you take a look at http://www.wampserver.com/en/ - this is what I used to use back when I was learning PHP.

Current rig: AMD Piledriver fx-8320 OC'd to 4.9ghz on 1.45v vcore | Asus Sabertooth 990fx r2 board | Gigabyte 7950 W3x| 8GB Corsair XMS3 1333mhz | 240GB OCZ Agility 3 SSD

XAMPP is the easiest server to use for Windows (and I believe they have a Mac and Linux port too), however if you want to use Microsoft's ASP.NET then you need to setup IIS (Internet Information Services) which can be found on your Windows install disk.

I also have to agree with everyone else on this one, if you plan on doing something even remotely professional (anything that's not just for you and your friends) then you need to pay for hosting.

Hope this helps!

hey i am using a windows 7 os and i have looked at wampserver but i am not sure on how to configure it. and it just a personal website for friends ect. and it is on my local connection

Just a quick note: If you're unsure how to configure it, it's really easy to accidentally

introduce security holes into your setup and grant access to your machine (or other machines

on your LAN) to people whom you definitely do not want to have access to your stuff.

It can be done, and depending on your ISP it won't be a problem with regards to legality,

especially as long as you don't have heavy traffic (which you won't have from what I can tell).

For example, my ISP has nothing about this being forbidden in the contract. I have my bandwidth,

and I can use it however I like.

However, as mentioned, security is a crucial and tricky thing with this. For that reason I

would recommend having a look at some "normal" web hosting. If you really want to do this,

there's a lot of reading you will have to do, especially with regards to security. It's

practically impossible to answer this in general without some more specific questions, there

are just way too many variables.

  • 4 weeks later...

thanks for all the help i have decided to just go with a free hosting webservie

Hi,

I would like to make it clear that free hosting are not reliable, because the only provide limited space  for your webpage and you cant add interactive features (chat rooms, message boards, games, online ordering etc.).A huge disadvantage is the Search engines they may ignore your site. And due to this your visitors may doubt your credibility. And there is no guarantees of site availability and longevity and they wont provide branded emails addresses (you@yourdomain.com).And Speaking about the customer support they are poor.So insted of going for a free hosting you can get a cheap hosting service and i would recommend you to use the hosting service provided by the site 9CubeHosting.com  where you can get the hosting service at low cost with unlimited dataspace and bandwidth with 99.9%server uptime with 24/7 customer support.
