Hey Guys!

I was trying to install Kali Linux (latest ISO) using a bootable USB that I made using Rufus (latest package) in ISO mode and NOT DD. The PC booted up and I made a partition in Live mode. I then went into the actual setup and when I got to the part where a CD-ROM was to be mounted, I got an error: "Failed to detect and mount CD-ROM". Then, when I disconnect and reconnect the USB to the port, I get through that part. But then another problem strikes where it fails to detect/find the CD-ROM.

Now I've tried reinstalling some software, updating the ISO and stuff but I want to make this clear:

I DO NOT HAVE A CD-ROM IN MY PC

And I think that's the reason, I just want to make sure if it really is cz It is a hell lot of hectic to work on this PC (it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaay tooooo messy :/)

Use dd.

Also, don't install kali. It's intended to be run as a live system. If you want to try Linux install a normal distro like Ubuntu.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

sudo chmod -R 000 /*

...are you under the impression that ISO mode preserves your data? It doesn't.

Yes it can. Ubuntu can do everything Kali can, you just need to install a couple of packages to do it. The only difference is that Kali comes with everything in live mode so you can carry it around on a pendrive. Can you name one program that Kali has and isn't available for Ubuntu?

You cannot access the content of your USB any longer after it has been created using DD mode). So if you want to modify some settings, or want to access the doc, or, say, copy the firmware for your Wifi card onto the USB, you may not be able to do so. Also, even if you are able to access the content, you will find that the available size you have is a lot less than the total size of your USB. For instance, if you DD copy a 4GB image onto a 16GB USB, then even if you can access your drive from Windows, you will only ever be able to access 4GB of your drive, and not 16.

I myself only prefer things when I'm familiar with them, can't know if I prefer it if I can't properly use it, but that's just might be me.

idk man i just like kali and parrot the most.. the reason im going with kali is cz every tutorial teaches with it and not parrot so... or else, i prefer parrot the most cz its like the COMPETE package and has better looks

You can just reformat the drive when you're done with it. It won't work properly otherwise so it's that or nothing. If you need to add files to the image just add them to the ISO and then write it to the pendrive in DD mode.

indeed, i prefer it AND in the process of learning :)

You're probably going to learn to hate it due to using it incorrectly and post a bunch of questions about problems that could have been avoided if you had used something else, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

You're not going to learn Linux by blindly following tutorials to the letter.

I do recomend only use kali as a live cd. Kali repos are always down. This makes installing/updating impossible. Also you dont want pen testing tools installed on your OS. If someone wanted to attack you, you have already done half their job for them by having pen test tools installed.

If they got a shell and have root then they can install pentest tools on any Linux systems.

If you want a security focused desktop and install it I can recommend parrot os
