Overclocking

I have been wanting to OC my 8700k for awhile now as it is running at 4.4ghz. I have a hyper evo 12 and do not have money for a new cooler or new cpu in case it were to be fried so don't bother telling me to get a new one  (highlighted cause people don't like reading and people have been assholes about this). I have used cinebench and at 4.4ghz I was getting around 3225 score consistently. I've heard to increase speed and voltage at the same time and to not go over 1.35V. I checked my voltage before overclocking and before overclocking my voltage it went to 1.30V on its own and that scared me to incrase the voltage. Anyone have any tips? I am relatively new to this and don't want to fry my cpu. In cinebench my highest temp was 80C.

Without changing the voltage, can you get a stable overclock of above 4.4?

I am afraid to try it incase I fry it immediately, maybe, but at 4.4 the temps reached 80C which scared me a bit

if you dont wanna fry it nor upgrade the cooler, don't overclock then. Negative offset for voltage at stock clocks (i.e. undervolting) is good enough.

Will overclocking the voltage help reduce temps?

There is a little bit of room, but why bother when the cooler's bad (I wont let it go past 80c), the board's weak, and you're only pairing it with a 2060? Undervolting can reduce power draw and heat output further without affect speed (i.e. efficiency), that's why I'm doing it.

I mean it only gets 80C in cinebench and even then I was seeing 76-78C at the highest, thats just what hardware monitoring was reporting that was my highest.

overclocking my 8086K on a 212 evo here, most people are aware that it can handle 6 core OC since the good old days of the 4930K and the like.

I mean when I play games it rarely goes past 70C and I don't understand why people say it is bad. Sure it may be loud but I don't really care.

Try Prime95, it will wreck the temperatures even in the lightest large FFT mode. R15 is really light when it comes to temperatures, that's why 80C there is already high enough for me.

well, it's bad because of the price. only worth around $25 when it's been sold above $30 for a while now.

Well I do not know much about ocing. I heard that ocing voltage along with speed "helps with temps" (their words, not mine). How will I know if it fails?

There is no time limit,just run it for 1 hour,

I am a 212 EVO owner too,on my Ryzen CPU it feels like an AIO,

I get maximum 70C after 1 hour of Prime95 with an overclock of 4GHz (Ryzen has higher IPC though)

Alright I will do that tomorrow and post my results here. I am assuming unlike cinebench it has an emergency stop

Prime95 is available for download, just try run that in smallFFT and monitor the core temps.

better cooling on those CPUs even with the same Hyper 212. Note that the power draw hasn't really changed despite process node shrink due to the lower frequency headroom for the old CPUs

Thing with heat output of CPUs is that it is exponentially affected by voltage, linearly affected by frequency. In theory 4.4GHz 1.2V has the same power draw as 5GHz 1.125V, but I can guarantee you that 1.125V is too low for the CPU to even boot, let alone run stable in the OS or demanding tasks in ambient cooling. Pulling transistors way below freezing point of water can increase their performance drastically allowing even 5GHz 1.125V to work, but then a weak cooler like that on air is essentially the opposite of that.

Oh it doesn't. The CPU will throttle like mad when it hits 100C, but it will keep itself pinned to 100C until you tell it to stop. I dont think there's a stop function for Prime95.

You'll know if it fails if any of these happen in no particular order

• CPU throttles
• Test fails
• OS hangs or crashes
• Instant reboot
• Shutdown

You can't fry the CPU due to the failsafes available in both chip and board

Then how does one "fry" the cpu?

This is back when thermal throttling isnt built into every CPU.

that's what I said, thermal throttling wont kick in until it's 100C
