I am 19 and live with my sister and mother still, I am unable to move out yet for certain circumstances. My router is all the way downstairs and I cannot run a Ethernet cable without it being in the way or ugly to my mom. What are some good alternatives? I have been using a power line adapter for awhile but it just isn't getting the job done anymore. When i built the PC i put in (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006AB1TXU?tag=pcpapi-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1) but it just give me good download speeds, etc. Also the reception of the wifi is very shotty in parts of the house. My mother cant get a good signal in her room, which is right above the living room where the router is. It is some type of apple router and not one I would have chose. So I am no quite sure what to do. Any advice? Thanks for the help in advance.

It really depends on what your budget is.  I'd say get a better powerline adapter.  If you have a lot more money then get rid of your router and look into a mesh solution.  What powerline adapter are you using?  Why isn't it doing the job anymore?

I think it might not be the adapter it actually might be the router the guy who recommended it to us said that that version of our router is being phased out. So I might need to get a new router, which I have no idea where to start on that.

That looks like your DSL modem with a built in router.  They usually aren't great.  Shouldn't have any effect on a powerline adapter though.  Exactly what problems are you having?

Random Wifi disconnection, very slow download speed, and bad quality video on most anything.

Right, but you mentioned problems with a powerline adapter.  First I'd disable the wifi on your modem and get an AC dual band router from a reputable brand like Linksys, TP-Link, or Asus to name a few.  You can then use ethernet from your DSL modem to a real router.  This won't make DSL any better unfortunately. Did you get the modem from your Telecom?  Maybe talk to them about an upgrade?  We are way past wireless G after all.  If you want to replace it completely talk to your service provider about what modems they will support on their system.

What do you mean those where the problems that I thought came from my power line adapter? I got the modem from Charter which is the cable service out here. The router is a out of Date apple router so I am thing maybe the router would fix the problem because they are phasing it out, and it used to work just fine.

Powerline is not wifi it is ethernet over your power lines.  That is why they call it powerline.  It should have nothing to do with your wifi router.  I just googled Actiontec 5000 and the only thing that came up was a DSL modem.  I'm guessing you have an Actiontec 500Mbs PWR511K01 adapter.  Those aren't great.  Knowing specifically what equipment you are using would help.  I'm not good at guessing over the internet.

Still, the same applies.  Replace your outdated router with something more modern.  I've had good luck with my Asus RT-AC66U.  These are dual band.  You will get better range on 2.4Ghz but better speed with 5Ghz.  A new router is still not magic fairy dust.  It will probably be a lot better than what you have but range is still an issue.  If that is the case I can recommend the TP-Link AV2000 Powerline adapter.  Been using mine for years and it works great.

I ment that it deals with the router because of the ethernet cable coming out of the router.

I have an apple Airport Extreme, try updating it using the Airport app on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Apple is indeed not making newer versions and adding features but they release an update not long ago.

If you have an old one (the flat ones and not a tower one) then I recommend replacing it, I have the newer ones (its from 2016) and it has good 802.11 AC that can perfectly handle my 200 down 200 up internet speeds

Charter

They provide standard cable modems. So any router will work. Just buy a better one. Asus, Netgear, Synology (what I have) and TPlink( if on a budget) is where I’d look.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
