Ryzen 7 2700 vs Ryzen 5 3600

Hey everyone. I’m currently rocking a 2400G I bought a while back and I’m looking to upgrade to a new processor. I’m having a hard time deciding between a 2700 which is $169 on Amazon and the 3600 at $195.

I know the 3600 is roughly 15-20% in single core and lightly threaded workloads including games, while the 2700 is about 15% faster in heavily multithreaded workloads. I’m not too concerned with gaming performance or pushing high fps, 60-90 1080p is good for me at this point, I only have a 1080p-144Hz monitor right now. I do like the idea of extra cores and threads and I’m looking into getting into video editing and rendering down the line and don’t intend on upgrading for a while.

If I do get the 2700 I plan on Overclocking all cores to at least 4.0-4.1Ghz if I get a good chip. I know the 3600 can usually hit 4.1-4.3GHz

What is everyone’s thoughts based on current prices and relative performance?

What memory configuration do you currently have?

Have you factored in the GPU as well? And what software will you be video editing with?

Currently rocking some TridentZ 3200MHz 2X8 probably gonna get two more dimms for 32GB setup when I start to edit video. Getting an RX 580 or the RX 5500 if it drops soon. And probably adobe premiere or Sony Vegas. Maybe even some free editing software instead if it’s good, I’ve been looking into reviews and tutorials.

Then I agree with @jstudrawa that the R5 3600 is a better processor to hold to for 2-4 years, the greatest majority of the desktoping experience is single threaded and you got a 144hz monitor while still games some.

On Premiere and Vegas Pro the actual "editing" tools are mostly single threaded so the better and snappier the cores you have are the better being realistic... the gains when rendering or exporting etc that is multi-threaded aren't really as worth it in my opinion... the 3600 still is a 6c/12t after all while lots of known youtubers still work out with Intel quadcores.

Another thing to notice is that GPU acceleration is something to aware of, Premiere Pro is pretty much just CUDA so you need a nVidia... but if you go with DaVince Resolve or Vegas Pro then you can use OpenCL on the RX580.

Just to wrap up, I also don't think you should worry about memory any time soon, this 16gb you got should suffice to get you started by every mean.

Thank you, I do appreciate the feedback.

Not to pivot too much but I have been considering saving my pennies for the 3700X. I’m sure it would be a much wiser investment in increasing my rigs longevity for sure. Just not sure if I want to spend the extra $130 or not right now, or if I do and just instead use it on a beefier graphics card like a RX 5700 on a deal or a used Vega 56/64.

Do yourself a favor, get a 3600 and a 5700 and call it a day. I just got my 3600 in the mail today. It's a beast. Running locked in @ 4.2ghz. I thought similar to you with regards to the 2700x. You won't miss the extra two cores. Wait for prices to drop on the 3700x and go with a 3600. Get a 240mm AIO or a Noctua and you should be set.

You'd be wrong about that wiser investment theory.  If you're not going to video edit until up to 4 years in the future... why are you spending money on it now?

Totally new stuff will be out by the time you "get around" to video editing, or whatever you get into.

Planning a build now for 2-4 years in the future is irresponsible with your money and lacks common sense.

Especially in the incredibly volatile market now and near future.  AMD is pushing hard, Intel is on the verge of nm change soon, and Intel has a GPU coming.

You're right, let me clarify.

Video editing, looking to within the next 6 months if not as soon as I get a new CPU/GPU. And I know the market is volatile. If now isn't the right time; when is?

It's definitely hard to gauge the future of the market and what you should or shouldn't buy with AMD and Intel right now on the verge of pushing out some really good stuff in the next 1-3 years. Should I just wait and wait and wait till the market settles and we are in another "intel like" lull in the CPU space where whoever is ahead just coasts for 5+ years like Intel did and that I know nothing exciting and much better is right around the corner?

Also, when I say 2-4 Years. I should be more clear on that position. I'm planning on having the CPU for 4 Years at least and the GPU closer to the 2-3 mark. Wouldn't you say a 4 maybe 5 year cycle to upgrade CPUs is a reasonable time to hold onto a processor before it feels sluggish?

What would you do if you were in my position?

Just want to share my experience so you have an idea.

I'm currently rocking a Ryzen 1600 with a GTX 1060 (6gb). I do a little video editing/encoding on the side to supplement what I earn from my day job. I've had this system ever since 1st gen Ryzen launched. So this makes my rig currently 2 years old. I use mostly Sony Vegas and a bit of Adobe Premier. The videos I work with are mostly 1080p so that isn't that taxing on my system. But lately, some of my clients are starting to want some 4k video and I'm finding that my system is struggling a bit. I'll be upgrading to a Ryzen 3600 when the holiday sales hits.

TLDR: I'm fine with what I have, but I plan to upgrade this holiday season so I can finish my jobs faster.

The deep blue sky is infinitely high and crystal clear.
