The computer is a pavilion a6720f

no matter what settings i use in the bios (very limited options) (ide, raid, achi) the computer will run slow/freeze/hang up when plugging any hdd into it. it will very rarely actually detect the hard drive correctly , in fact it only ever did it once

With no drives attached at all the bios is very responsive and the board seems to be totally fine.

already tried a new battery , tried every mode and 4 different sata hdds that are known working , considered a bios update but I doubt that'll fix it plus I need a working drive of some form to connect to it.

Not spending a dime on it , if you got any other ideas let me know.

alright never mind this is solved

according to ancient texts on hp forums , the board tends to fry its own chipset from dried thermal paste under the heat sink. the only solutions posted that worked were buying a replacement as new thermal paste was shown to not work.

I imagine using a sata controller would also fix it but I don't have any laying around
