New computer locks up/reboots

Go to solution Solved by Palden,

Yes, but first just run command prompt as an admin and type in "sfc /scannow" and let that run. Past that, I would actually check and see if you need to update your BIOS next.

Built a brand new computer I bought everything then had a local place put it together for me as I am very much an amateur. I played very mild games on it for sometime before I started to look at more graphically intense games. It ran great for about three weeks. It all started while playing NMS (only high graphics) for about ten minutes. The display just when dark then the computer restart. No warnings at all. I was getting a kernel error code 41 when I looked in the even log. Which make sense seeing as the computer shut down then restart unexpectedly. I then and made sure all my drivers were up to date. All seemed fine. Seeing that I am an amateur it is very likely that I missed checking something. So I loaded back into NMS and had the same thing occur two more times only on the last time the computer did not restart its self it just kept the display dark and I could not even power down with the power button or the restart button I had to flip my PSU switch. Frustrated I went to play The Guild 3 to pass some time and then I would look into it, to no avail the same thing happened. I restart the computer once again then proceeded to text my wife how frustrated I was after having a brand new computer built and having issues with it when the computer restart its self while just idling on the desk top. I took it back to the shop that I had it built at and they literally have just let it sit on a desk for a few days. I have started to look for a way to fix it myself while it is at their shop still.

Short Version

Playing NMS display goes dark computer restarts

Checked drivers alls well

Start NMS back up same issue, last time computer just didn't reboot

Played The Guild 3 same issue

Whined to wife while idle at desktop issue happened again

From what I have read elsewhere it could be that the PSU or the GPU are bad.

The shop that currently have my computer are saying its a bad driver.

What is DDU? Also I got my drivers from the ASUS website will the GeForce Experience be better. Where would I get said GeForce Experience?

Geforce Experience is what you use to get the drivers for Nvidia GPUs. DDU is Display Driver Uninstaller, it uninstalls all drivers and files associated with the GPU so that when you install new ones there are no conflicts, it's mostly used for corrupt or non working drivers. All other drivers besides GPU/Display are fine to get off of the Motherboards website, or through Device Manager however you'll want to get GPU/display drivers from Geforce Experience for Nvidia or Adrenaline for AMD, otherwise you'll get outdated or incorrect drivers.

Awesome thanks for all the info. I’ll postpone doing that for now as I was going to get my computer the tech who was not supposed to be there until Friday was there. Feed me that possibly the PSU is not strong enough for running games and having all the leds. (Perhaps someone could advise me there) He told me that the 2060 pulls like 500w~ which I’m pretty sure it does not even get far off of 200. Also that a stick of ram may be bad. I do recall having issues with getting the leds on the gpu to sync with the aura sync so I reinstalled the drivers two or three times I’m guessing that’s gonna be the issue.

So the tech ended up doing what you said and he says it’s working as it should. Thanks much!

What they're a technician and they think that a 2060 will pull 500W? I wouldn't take it there again.

So I just got it back and same thing is happening. Just checked the GPU driver and its out of date so they lied about updating it for me. The also told me that they placed the GPU in to the wrong slot when they first built it for me. They originally had it in the bottom slot and have now moved it to the top slot. I'm going to get DDU and ensure that the right driver is installed properly.

Yeah, I would advise to never take it back to them again. That's a lot of issues, and GPUs are some of the easier components to install and get drivers for.

Yea they didn't charge me called it warranty work. They clearly have no idea what they are doing. For now on I'll have to teach myself and look to the intellect of the internet. Do you know if the slot on the MOBO that the GPU was in matters?

It doesn't really matter, typically the top slot is the one you want it in because it's faster but even if it's in the lower slot it should still work as intended. The only time you want a GPU in the bottom slot is if the top slot is broken or you have multiple GPUs.

Another question sorry if I ask a lot. This red led on top of my case now blinks red when before only the led below it flashed and it was blue any idea? Or at least what does it mean?

That's the HDD status LED, they probably didn't have it hooked up the first time. It blinks based on the use of the HDD.

Even if I have two M.2 SSDs? Also I did the whoile DDU and GeForce deal and NMS ran fine for a few minutes. I'll have to test it later as i have to go to work now. You sir have been a great deal of help and wish I could buy you a beer. I'll post an update about the crashing after I do some testing.

Yeah just let me know, typically with SSDs the HDD light will still function it's just more stable, it may blink or flash every once in a while but for the most part it will be pretty solid. If you have a mechanical HDD it blinks quite a bit.

Well no such luck. I played NMS for about 40 minutes then it reboot its self with so warning. Then I went to open my event viewer to look at the codes that I got and the screen just went dark causing me to reset it via the switch on the PSU.

I was watching my temps and the CPU never got over 60 C. The PSU was blowing a bit hotter but thats to be expected as the air flow is not as good for it.

When i looked at the event viewer I saw that there were a few things that popped up.

The code 41 makes sense with the computer rebooting in an improper way.

There are a few error codes that I am going to look into one was a code 3 that occurred once, and a code 6008 the occurred twice.

The warnings were plentiful there was one code 4, two code 27, two code 360, and five code 10016.

Like I said I'm going to look into those but if you could see what going on with that just by glancing at the codes that would be amazing.

So far this is the best thing I have found that may be causing my reboot.

1. Open the Start Menu and search for cmd.

2. Right-click on the search result titled cmd and click on Run as administrator.

3. Type perfmon.msc /s and press Enter.

4. The Performance Monitor should now show up on your screen. In the left pane of the Performance Monitor, double-click on Data Collector Sets to expand it.

5. Click on Startup Event Trace Sessions under Data Collector Sets.

6. In the right pane of the Performance Monitor, locate the ReadyBoot entry and double-click on it.

7. Navigate to the Stop Condition tab and replace whatever is in the Maximum Size field with 40.

8. Click on Apply and then on OK, close the Performance Monitor, close the elevated Command Prompt and restart your computer.

I will make an update on this once I've had time to test it again.

Funny you say that I actually found a list that taught me how to do this and it seems to have worked so far I played two hours with no issues. I also optimized the SSDs. Now lets see how it hold up with a few hours of homework.

Thanks loads for responding
