5700 XT huge clock fluctuations Please help :(

Got a 5700 XT last month and performance hasnt been what I was hoping for. Getting 50-60 average FPS at 1080P in Assassins Creed origins... Noticed some fluctuating numbers in MSI afterburner.Seems to drop as low as 400 and rarely gets up to 1600 or higher.

 

These spikes are seen while gaming or using Kombuster about halfway though the chart is when I started gaming full screen.

What PC do you have (in total) as this doesn't tell us much of what could be causing the issue.  Need to know the entire makeup.

 

That and AC:Origins is a running joke of definition of poorly optimized iirc

Odyssey ran really damn well for me (it's hard on CPUs, other than that it's not badly optimized at all and the frametimes are incredibly consistent), IDK how it compares to Origins because I didn't play much of that. 

Should also make sure v-sync or an fps lock isn't holding the card back, could make sure radeon chill is off as well.

What RAM speed?  Ryzen 1 is greatly affected.  Difference between 2133mhz and 3200mhz is night and day in performance on those chips.

Also, just noting, AMD based Island cards (Fury etc) have real issues to this day reporting through third party software.  AMDs Control Center, MSI Afterburner, Sapphire Trixx, etc wont read them right, the only thing that will is Windows Task Manager oddly enough.  Discovered this finally myself after pulling my hair out, implementing stuff like "ClockBlocker" and deep diving into Reddit.

 

Could be similar situation?

 

@uno99 other than ram speed question I asked above what is task manager displaying as usage for GPU?  Im personally curious on this.

Pretty sure I have it set to 3200mhz but I can check when I reboot.

My concern is mostly the GPU clock fluctuating SO MUCH. is that normal?

What is Windows Task Manager reporting as usage?  Fluctuating or constant (consistent)?  

 

The more I look at it, I think @Zando Bob is right.  Check Radeon Chill settings, etc.  That clock shouldn't be fluctuating unless something is telling it to (like that).  Im don't own one of these cards but you could look into seeing if the app "ClockBlocker" made for AMD cards forces a constant clock.

DDR stands for double data rate.  

 

You may have set it to XMP (or DOCP) in your BIOS settings to try to achieve that profile however you are actually at 2133mhz, the lowest end for that CPU, as it reset itself upon booting up (DRAM Frequency 1066 x 2 ((DDR stands for double data rate)) = 2133mhz basically) if it cant achieve the frequency you requested.

 

I have a 2133mhz kit, a 3200mhz kit and a 3600mhz kit on Zen platforms.  The difference is night and day in gaming for FPS on my R7 1700's I own.  Short version, battlefield 5 at ultra is unplayable with 2133mhz.  And smooth 80 FPS average on my rigs at 1440p with 3200mhz, even more frames at 3600mhz.

 

Your frequency is really holding back your CPU.  That CPU is guaranteed to work with its mem controller at 2666mhz (which is LEAPS above 2133mhz for that CPU) - set that in the BIOS no matter what happens as your board and chip will support that.

Damn I was sure I had that set right... Ok I'm gonna fix it and try again.

 

FYI while gaming the GPU usage looks to be about 60% and it is fluctuating.... I'll try again once the memory is fixed.

Ok I went into BIOS and I'm a bit confused - I have it set to 3200 (and it wont go any higher) but it's displaying that it's running at 2133, and in the SPD it says 2133. Your CPU memory controller only guarantees to be able to play nice with, up to, 2666mhz.  Anything else is luck or finding the correct timings to get a better frequency.  

 

Your MOBO guarantees up to 3200mhz OC RAM.  No issues there.  Its your CPU not playing nice.

 

Likely you need to manually OC it until you get timings that will work to achieve that frequency.  Looser timings, more likely it will take and be stable.  And from my personal venture into Zen with ram speeds - Frequency is more important than timings for gaming purposes.  I have loose timings on my 3600mhz to achieve stable.  

 

Set it to 2666mhz first so its stable and you are letting the CPU properly breathe while it works.

 

If you are getting the same fluctuations in Task Manager (Crazy up and down usage spikes), like @Zando Bob said there are a few factors at play here.  Could be RADEON chill (driver software package option), could be a bad driver (have you tried rolling back drivers and trying different ones?)

 

Do you have any other game to try and see if it replicates the issue?

 

AC Origins, just google "AC Origins horribly optimized" and you will see all of the posts relating to the resource hog, and performance this game gives, to a lot of users.

Your MOBO guarantees up to 3200mhz OC RAM.  No issues there.  Its your CPU not playing nice.

 

Likely you need to manually OC it until you get timings that will work to achieve that frequency.  Looser timings, more likely it will take and be stable.  And from my personal venture into Zen with ram speeds - Frequency is more important than timings for gaming purposes.  I have loose timings on my 3600mhz to achieve stable.  

 

Set it to 2666mhz first so its stable and you are letting the CPU properly breathe while it works.

 

If you are getting the same fluctuations in Task Manager (Crazy up and down usage spikes), like @Zando Bob said there are a few factors at play here.  Could be RADEON chill (driver software package option), could be a bad driver (have you tried rolling back drivers and trying different ones?)

 

Do you have any other game to try and see if it replicates the issue?

 

AC Origins, just google "AC Origins horribly optimized" and you will see all of the posts relating to the resource hog, and performance this game gives, to a lot of users.

I updated my bios and I was able to assign properly 3200 (I think... please check my picture)

My game performance seems slightly better but not much 65-69 FPS average.

I'm still noticing the huge fluctuations reported in Afterburner. What I noticed now and I didnt before is that the GPU clock seems higher and more stable when I'm tabbed out of the game. Same for GPU usage in task manager. also noticed the game is now crashing... once during start up and then once about 10 minutes later while sitting here tabbed out typing this... could it be the memory timings?

Yup BIOS needs to be latest for most stability.  Still comes down to the CPU memory controller.  My 3600mhz crashes sometimes 1 time per night, sometimes will go a week without a crash while gaming.  If I am in real competitive games I downclock to 2666mhz so there is zero issue.  On my 3200mhz rig I crash maybe 1 time per week average at best so I always keep it at 3200mhz.

 

When you tab out, you enter 2D mode (not 3D) for desktop, so yes your GPU will downclock as its not working.  At this point yes its the timings and frequency (imho) causing the crashes you are now experiencing.  Id still set it to 2666mhz so you can trouble shoot the GPU first, then once that's fixed work on your RAM (I use CL18 to achieve 3600mhz)

 

What is your CPU per core usage at side by side?  Also the XT is around 1755 core clock - if you are at that clock during gaming (not tabbed out) or whatever your GPU should be at, you are good to go.  (This is the reason I have two monitors solely lol, so I can monitor while tasking to see the issues)

Actually Im all over the place in this thread, sorry working and tabbing in and out once in a while. 

 

Download Unigine Heaven Benchmark, do a run and see how the GPU sits on the core, usage, temps, etc.  Monitor with the MSI Afterburner overlay so you can see the clocks, temps, usage etc live while the benchmark runs.

Triestern thanks so much again. 

I actually did a few things and tweaked everything. Im running Superposition benchmark and it seems like my results are on par with other users. 5426 was my best overclocked score with 3200 ddr @ 18T 
Also it looks like this benchmark fully saturates my GPU and my core clock is pretty much pinned at max the whole time.
I'm gonna go play my game now (finally) and atleast now I'll know that theres nothing wrong with my computer making the performance not great.
