Hi there,

This is my first proper full assembly build, and I'm having trouble getting it to post.

My specs are as follows:

Motherboard: MSI X470 Gaming Pro

CPU: AMD 3900X
Cooler: Dark Rock Pro 4
Memory: Gskill Trident Z Neo F4-3600C16D-32GTZN
PSU: Corsair AX860i
GPU: MSI 2080ti Gaming Trio

Storage: Samsung 970 EVO plus

In detail. I power my PC on, all the fans and RGB light up. My monitor turns on (it seems to react to the fact that there's a Display Port input) however it gives me a message with "no input" after which the screen goes back to sleep.

I did test the monitor seperately, it works.

One of the things I think might be in play is that I have a GPU with 2 x 8 pin slot, and 1 x 6 pin slot. However I do not have dedicated PCI-E 6 pin power connector with my PSU so I am using an 8 pin that splits off into a 6 pin and a 2 pin, and simply not using the 2 pin. Don't know if this could affect my GPU.

The same is said for my CPU power connector on my motherboard. I have 2, next to each other. One 8 pin and one 4 pin. I'm not sure wether I need the 4 pin but just to be sure I plugged in another 8 pin that splits off in 2, and again not using the remaining 4 pin.

I also disassembled my cooler and checked the CPU for any damage, but I could not find any.

I tried running different DIMM slots for my memory and using only 1 stick.

I tried pusing the CMOS reset button on my motherboard.

I tried different power cables for my CPU to see if any are dead.

I haven't tried different power cables for my GPU as the RGB lights up and the fans start spinning immediately.

That's about as far as I got, would really appreciate some help!

Thanks.

Have you verified that the bios on the board is up to date as some boards need a bios update to supports Ryzen 3000?

Well the MSI website says its compatible with Ryzen 3rd gen out of the box. However how would you go about updating the BIOS if it doesn't post?

different cpu for the time being... not much more of an choice or well you can try to create a bootable usb via rufus to boot into dos and install bios via that.. its a longshot but should work :D  create a bootable usb and place new bios to the board also boot into the device and type bios name press enter and voila :D  sorry i was a lazy reader on the original post, kinda eyebolled it

Some EU input to Canadian IT :D

Well I don't have another CPU and the second option sounds a bit complicated. Care to elaborate?

download rufus https://rufus.ie/ i assume you have a laptop or something to do that part on...  download latest bios>insert usb to pc(laptop or etc...)> open rufus>reimage the drive(boot selection freeDOS)>copy the bios to the usb> insert the usb to the main pc> boot to it should open like a cmd type of command line> type the bios name> press enter

and it should start to update it

Some EU input to Canadian IT :D

Well thanks for the step by step. But either I'm doing something wrong or it doesn't work. I downloaded rufus, reimaged the drive to freeDOS and copied the BIOS file to the USB (its a .1DO file correct?) but still nothing.

One thing I did notice this time, all this time I think my keyboard hasn't lit up once. Does this simply mean my board is fried? The strange thing is my wireless mouse does start charging. I have a wireless mouse that charges through USB.

well you could try to remove the cmos battery and boot it without it... also not sure wheter ur board has onboard gpu but u could try to boot it with onboard gpu... just a random thought... sometimes the simplest solutions work :D  monitor has correct display input selected? :D  :D  :DxD  xDxDxD yea yea im a comedy genius... but other than that its gotto be an hardware error... and i dont know what else to try... cmos reset best bet i believe...

https://www.msi.com/blog/the-latest-bios-for-amd-300-400-series-motherboard also found this not sure wheter it will help or not... just found it interesting

Well I already tried resetting the CMOS that didn't work, not sure if removing the battery is going to make much of a difference. Might try it later if really nothing else works.

However if it is a hardware error. How do I find out what component is broken?

Thanks again.

I found the 7B79v1A on the MSI website, but I haven't tried the BIOS flash button yet. Will give it a shot tomorrow.

So!

This is just my luck. Turns out I have one of the few MSI x470 boards WITHOUT support of BIOS flashback. ?

Now you can contact AMD to help you out, by sending you a bootkit with an older CPU. However for me that is jus too much of a hassle for me, and I don't feel like waiting that long.

So after calling around to some workshops and after all the googling I've done, and after trying out a different GPU to make sure it really isn't that which is failing me.

I think I've decided to just buy a new motherboard from the x570 chipset. Which should support AMD Ryzen 3000 out of the box.

Hopefully it is the BIOS that is at fault otherwise I'll be throwing away money. But at this point I'm fairly certain it is.
