Hello!

So I am experiencing some preview lag on various editing software like windows movie maker, sony vegas and shotcut.

I have some footage that I would like to edit, that editing anything when your preview is laggy is very hard.

I have a ryzen 5 2400g, 16gb 3200mhz and a rx 580.

I've also tried editing 60fps footage but that still turned out to be laggy.

The only editing software that preview didn't lag was adobe premiere pro but it had some other glitches and quirks which made it really hard to work with.

I was also thinking of getting a ryzen 5 3600 soon, so would that fix the problem?

Edit: forgot to mention that the video i was trying to edit was in 1080p 120fps, I also have virtualization turned off in the bios (I don't know if that has to do with anything)
Also, on my old pc with a amd a10 cpu, i would edit 1080p 60fps footage on sony vegas with no problems.

My experience is only really with Davinci resolve, so if this isn't applicable just ignore it.

Make sure your preview quality isn't set to 1:1. That'll murder your CPU while trying to scrub. Usually 1:4 is fine as your preview is no larger then 1/4th of your screen.

Check your codec: Certain formats are much more CPU demanding for very similar quality.

Check your preview renderer: Is your GPU rendering the preview or your CPU?

Fine you want the PSU tier list? Have the PSU tier list: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1116640-psu-tier-list-40-rev-103/

Just tried this and it isn't working for me.

No, turning off virtualization shouldn't make any difference.

Have you checked task manager to see what's at load during editing?

What drives are you using? Have you checked their health with software like CrystalDiskInfo?

On task manager, while playing the video in the editor, the cpu spikes up to 60% usage and stays there.
I have a 1tb hdd and in CrystalDiskInfo it says that its health status is good.

What version of Windows are you using? In Win10, the task Manager shows usage for drives as well. Check and see if there are background updates or processes that are taxing the drive you're editing on.

What motherboard are you using? Make sure that the ram is in the correct slots for dual channel to work.

Yeah I'm on win10, on task manager my disk usage is around 40% while playing the video, there aren't any background updates going on, I have a b450m hdv and the ram is seated well on the motherboard and working fine in dual channel.

What type of video file are you trying to edit? Format and codec?

It might need to be converted to something more friendly for whatever software you're using.
