I am trying to upgrade my dell optiplex sff 780 with a better powers supply. Any recommendations. I know dell has unique motherboards and wondering if I can throw any powersupply

Nope.  Proprietary garbage.

Not only does the mobo not have standard power connectors, the size of the PSU isn't standard either.

Yes.  It is called: get a normal case that supports real PSUs.  I'm sorry to say there really are only two main roads from the fork you have arrived at:

Road 1 - Abandon that dead-end platform and bring any compatible parts that make sense into a new build that doesn't use Dell's case, weird-PSU, and non-standard motherboard (may be very few other than drive(s), that is ok as something that old likely doesn't have compatible RAM or CPU with a new system).

Road 2 (not recommended, stated here as a joke) - Strongly consider the fire-hazard risk of forcing another PSU to use proprietary connectors on an older Dell OEM motherboard platform.  Either that or hope that some other random used eBay-special Dell PSU is slightly better and fits it the same way, but I don't expect such a PSU to be an upgrade nor is it likely to handle a modern GPU that needs PSU 6/8 pin power.

Adapter for the cables?  Yes.

Adapter to fit a normal PSU in that case?  No.

What you can do is buy a normal case, PSU and motherboard and keep the Dell's CPU, RAM and drive and put that in the new case.

What are you trying to accomplish? If it's just a internet and ms office machine, upgrade the ram to 8gb. (Make sure it's compatible) and swap out the hard drive for an ssd. Leave the power supply alone. If you are trying to game then it's time for a new pc

Aren't they TFX? I haven't worked on one in quite some time.

Ok, #1 yes there is an adapter for the power connector to allow you use any power supply you want, however the new power supply won't fit in the Optiplex 780 DT case, however if you have a 780 Mt (mid tower) then you are fine. If you want to scrap the case, then get the adapter which is available online just search "Optiplex 780 power connector converter, it's about $14 average, unless you order it from china(which is about $10 average) you would then need the other adapters for proprietary fan, front panel connectors and that a should do it.

Option 2

Keep the old PSU and add an RTX 650E which uses less power, and doesn't need additional power, that coupled with a Q9550 will get you quad core performance, without stressing the current PSU..add 16gigs of Ram, and you are good.. oh, and add a 1TB SSD to speed up boot time and file access, now you have a nice, speedy desktop, that won't play most games, but will be great for all your home office needs, really fast and efficient. Cheap upgrades, but efficient. Oh, you will have to do some cutting on the back panel to make gtx650E fit in the case, and get a PCIE extender, so you can mount the card sideways .their are videos available online to sho you how ..by Linus, and some others, just search Optiplex 780 upgrade.  Good luck, this is what I did to my Optiplex 780, and I am verry happy with it.

Hope this helps .
