Help, HDD issues

Go to solution Solved by Madmanchris1,

it was a problem with windows 8 ( i think). downloaded software it didnt work but then opened up disk system management ( which is extremely hard to find in win 8) found two partitions still couldn't configure them so changed them to GTP ( or something) instead of MBR, and it works fine and shows up as 2.72TB. works fine now thanks for helping.

Online quote for GTP & MBR Differences:

In most cases, you will be fine with either MBR or GPT. It is only in situation where you need to install Windows on a Mac, or when you need to have a partition bigger than 2TB, that you need to use GPT, or convert MBR to GPT. Also, for the newer model of computer that uses UEFI, it will only support GPT. ( i think that was my problem)

I had 3 external Hdd's

1TB Seagate (usb 2)

1TB Hitachi (usb 2)

3TB Seagate (usb 3)

i cracked them all open. and put them in my case connected them with sata 6gb/s cables. ( already had os installed on 250gb ssd prior to cracking the cases open)

pc works fine os is win 8.1 on a 250gb ssd. im just looking to use these hdds as additional storage without raid

the 1TB Seagate works fine.

The 1 TB Hitachi some how turns the Hdmi display port off when i boot and shows no signal (only with power sata cable in maybe a doggy power connection maybe the 6gb/s sata connector has no effect in or out). the data on here can be wiped if necessary. as soon as unplug sata power cable and reboot display shows.

The 3TB Seagate Shows but says needs formatting but when put back into the old external casing works fine its NTFS. is there anyway i can get this to show correctly with data intact? i would transfer the data and format but i don't have enough space unless i buy another hdd which id rather not do.

any help would be appreciated thanks.

Those drive aren't exactly meant to be used that way. As for the 3TB Seagate, you don't have much other option but to wipe it, you could try the same for the Hitachi, then transfer data to it (and the other Seagate) from the 3TB Seagate.

But as i only know so much i can't guarantee anything, so yeah, consider that.

Thanks, do you mean re house the hitachi then format it in windows os as an external? because i cant format it from sata cables.

Yes, that's the only option i see. I just wish you luck, i am pretty sure that the Hitachi will NOT work. But as for the Seagate, it should be fine once you format it, can't guarantee it though.

Hey i got all my data off the 3TB Seagate and put it inside the pc then reformatted it and now it shows up as 367GB ?? im no mathematician but some thing doesn't add up.

any ideas what went wrong?

I put the Hitachi one back in the enclosure then windows fixed it then i reformatted it and used it to store data ( through usb).

Maybe the 3TB one used a different format, from the one you formatted it to? I have never heard of such a thing happening, in this scenario i am sadly useless. I will edit this or post again if i think of something.

yeah maybe ive tried formatting it in every setting but nothing changes it, went into bios and it still says same. if i go into HDD:_ properties:- Hardware:- (hddname) properties:- volume:- populate. then it shows up at 2.7TB ish but there is no further options . so close but yet so far

Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

I think i might have to fork out the cash for a proper internal HDD.
