I recommend you go directly to AT&T and ask if there is a way. Does AT&T not provide the HTC Droid DNA? Couldn't you buy it from the factory? Then have it under whichever provider you choose?

You have many options...

Option 1. the official thing to do is to ask the provider you are currently with for the unlock code.

Option 2. another thing you can do is use one of the many websites online that sell unlock codes for various phones.

Option 3. if you are willing to spend some time and do some research you can find ways to unlock the phone yourself, i've personally done this a few times in the past, I would reccomend looking for guides for your spesific phone online.

Option 1 sounds like the thing to do. But, why not just buy the phone and have it activated on AT&T?

My guess is for one thing it is very expensive to buy an unlocked phone compared to buying it from at&t/verizon/etc... And also he might already have the phone.

I know him in real life, he doesn't. Buying it (non activated) from HTC is $749.99, and he seems to be unwilling to switch to Verizon. It only can be bought activated to Verizon for free and a two year contract, with a $350 ETF. I suppose it could be bought through Verizon and pay the ETF instead of the full $750 bucks and have it added to his AT&T plan.
