A big one, the R5 1600 is a solid all round CPU, whereas the 2400 is showing it's age for sure (it's good for what it is, but it's still a 4c/4t CPU and newer聽games are wanting around 6-8 cores now). I've had both these CPUs, the 2400 bottlenecked my 980 Ti a good bit, whereas the R5 1600 kept up with my 1080 easily, even at stock. Mine was a good chip and hit 4GHz easily, most of them hit 3.8-4, golden ones do 4.1 IIRC.聽

Budget I assume. And the Zen single core perf is about on par with haswell chips, it should be slightly ahead of the i5 on single core, both clocks and IPC (assuming you use 3000MHz CL14-16 RAM). It also brings 2 more full cores and 8 more threads to the table, a significant performance boost.聽

I'd recommend the R5 2600 if it fits in the OP's budget though, purely for the better RAM compatibility.聽

What should i go with that is sub $150

For just the CPU? or both CPU and mobo? Ryzen runs DDR4, not DDR3 like the i5, so you'll need new RAM too. What'd be the full budget for CPU/mobo/RAM, and what country are you in?聽

Something like this would be an excellent option:聽

PCPartPicker Part List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/BwftKB

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor 聽($129.20 @ OutletPC)聽

Total: $317.04
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

The MSI Tomahawk is one of the best B450 mobos, also supports the Zen 2 chips IIRC, if you decide to upgrade down the line. Could聽go for something like an ASRock Pro4 if you need to cut costs.聽

You would get a marginal improvement, it's a much better processor. Not to mention a 6 core 12 thread while that dusty old i5 is a 4 core 4 thread. Just remember you will have to get a new Motherboard and Ram as well, as Ryzen isn't compatible with intel boards or DDR3 ram.

If you're planning on gaming and streaming, you may also want to look into upgrading from that GT 1030 it will be a big hindrance especially for streaming, it's already an outdated low end GPU that can barely run most games if you add streaming to the mix even with the CPU upgrade you're going to have terrible performance depending on what games you plan to stream.

What games are you trying to play/stream?聽

Putting money into an outdated platform like that is not really the best idea, I'd say go for the r5 1600 then at a later date get a new GPU like the 1650 or 1660ti.
