learn Learn the basic stuff about computers

What can I do to learn about the basics of computer. I`m talking Motherboards, Memory Graphics, Card and all the stuff that go into them. I have been a gamer for most of my life but have never made any effort what so ever to understand stuff about the computer I`m playing on.
I want to buy a new computer but don't have the foggiest what all the differences are. I'm currently looking up the different parts and trying to understand them. However the moment I think I have a rough idea of what I'm supposed to be looking at I watch a video online and they mention 100 different things that are meaningless to me. 

How did other people learn? Do you know of a video series that explains some of this. I've watched some of the Linus Tech Tips and thought some of them are very basic and I can understand, the majority of them expect to have at least some understanding. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (Apologies if I`m posting this in the wrong place)

I am going to be that guy, and recommend a textbook.

 

A+ Guide to Managing & Maintaining Your PC - 8th Edition (Because 8th edition is cheep now)

 

Probably the only useful textbook I have ever read. Highly recommended if you have a genuine interest, lots of pictures and walks you through most hardware and basic software concepts.

Feel free to be that guy. Does this assume a really low level of understanding? It looks a little hefty. I imagine I could knock someone out if I hit them with it (not that I'm planning to).

How I learned? Hours of YouTube, some Googling and just jumping in head first.

My best suggestion, grab an older working computer and start by a basic tear down and rebuild going slowly to ensure everything goes smoothly. Take pictures as you go and Google any questions you may have along the way. The best way to learn it is to do it. You’ll never know it all but you have to start somewhere.
