Hi there,

I'm planning to buy and add a lot of used PCIE x1 video cards for BOINC computing but they're all equipped with low-profile brackets, and buying the standard profile bracket... well, it costs as much as the video card! (NVS290)

I've been digging around all internet looking for this low-profile adapter (pic below) but this is the only picture I've found around. No shops, no nothing. Any right keywords? Shops (shipping to Italy)?

Thanks

It's fake or for a custom case.

The regular cases have a narrow rectangle through which the connectors come out, and that lip where you screw the card to case is wider than the rectangle, so it can't go outside the case.

If you plan to use x1 cards, then why not get some pci-e x1 risers. you can screw the video card like normal profile card and use the riser to connect to board.

I don't think that would physically work in a pcie slot. The top of a pcie bracket is larger than the rest. It wouldn't fit anywhere.

I think why you're not seeing anything on it is because it's not a real product. It's likely some kind of OEM specific thing.

I've been studying the picture and it seems that the low-profile card has a custom bracket with a smaller end (where it can be screwed). So the adapter seems usable only with that custom OEM ones.

The riser's idea it's good, but, still... The gap would be open.

You know what, Free solution: I'll rip out the bracket and install the card without it. (unless the weight is too much and it will bend the PCI-e x1 connector)

I assume you have a Quadro NVS 290. I searched it on the Italian amazon store and I found... this. Don't know how much it'll help, but here. https://www.amazon.it/HP-quadro-290-scheda-grafica-interna/dp/B0044ZYNE6/ref=sr_1_1?__mk_it_IT=ÅMÅŽÕÑ&keywords=NVS+290&qid=1569843904&s=gateway&sr=8-1

Video cards delivered... and I've realised something funnier: those brackets are reversed.

Below

- NVS 290 without bracket

- NVS 290 with low profile reversed bracket

- a standard video card

I've installed the video card without the bracket but it's a little heavy so: I can't install it with that custom bracket (there is no hole for screwing it), and I don't want to stress the PCIe slot installing it without bracket.

Lesson learned: triple-check uncommon items, courtesy of idiotic brands developing nonsense custom design with the sole purpose of charge more for the "pro" users.

I've found the correct brackets on ebay, but it cost more than the card itself...!

Brackets arrived... problem solved thanks to that ebay seller:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/STANDARD-HIGH-PROFILE-ATX-BRACKET-FOR-NVIDIA-QUADRO-NVS-290-VIDEO-CARD-/282319875278

Yes, it lacks the screw on the board, but as it's lightweight I don't think it would be a problem.

IMG_20191018_160249.thumb.jpg.f9a33055159bbcee7a9317621ea19bb6.jpg

To sum up:

x4 NVS290 VIDEO CARD with funny brackets: € 28,83 (shipping included)

x4 just the brackets: € 30,78 (shipping included)

Final price per card: € 14,90

Conclusion:

1. As said in the previous post, triple-check strange hardware components, especially the "pro" ones

2. Every card is capable of 44GFLOPS of computing power (from BOINC test), almost 1/3rd of a 9500GT. Not that bad for filling all those PCIe x1 slots, especially when it's a single-slot card. Final price, is still reasonable for a special card like that one.

3. I want a metal 3d printer.

P.s.

ebayer sells NVS300 and NVS315 brackets but with an higher cost... even if it's the same than the NVS290!
