Do I still need a GPU?

Not whether or not there's no display connected, but if there was no GPU at all. That's my concern.

That is main plan. But I want this as a back up plan in case someone with RDP isn't there and needs to access the system.

This one claims to have it's own little GPU inside. I'm thinking that might work, no? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0086359SG

I looked at that one, and in one of the responses to a question there, a StarTech support person said what I quote below, leading me to believe that it may not work.

Our USB2DVIE3 uses a combination of your computer's CPU, and it's primary display adapter to render the video signal. Our USB video adapters are ideal for common office applications, web browsing, and video playback. They aren't ideal for CAD applications, 3D games, or scenarios where precise pixel reproduction is required.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this ;-;

Hi all! I have an odd ball question. Long story short, I have a specific application where a GPU is not required as no display will be connected to the computer. However there are rare times in which I may have to download an update for software. In that case, I'm wondering if a USB to VGA adapter would work (something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A2E1MQA/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_2?smid=A3HIHADV23VGU1&psc=1), or does that still require a GPU to power/process? Also if don't have a GPU at all in the computer, will that stress the CPU even more when programs are open/running, even without a display being connected?

The use case is this PC will be rackmount in a mobile case and be a plug and play device used for a MIDI keyboard in a live stage environment. The MIDI program would be set to open itself and certain presets on start up, thus not needing a monitor, let alone any input from a user.

Softwares include Ableton Live and Kontakt Player Plugin

Basic Specs:

M/B: Biostar TA970

CPU: AMD FX 8320

RAM: G.Skill Trident X 2x8gb DDR3 1866

Thanks in advance!

For your last question, no it will not stress the CPU at all having no display connected.  No difference in performance at all.

Why not just RDP whenever you need to use it?

That seems weird to me based on the fact that it has a mini gpu inside it. But thanks for finding that.

Does the CPU not even have integrated graphics? Also... What you can do is remote into the device when it comes to needing an output onto something.

As I said before, RDP will be the primary way to access the system, this is a plan b in case the few people with RDP are not present at a time when the system may need to be accessed.

Well I guess I still need a GPU in the system, which sucks because I was hoping to have one less thing hanging of the motherboard. Thanks guys.
