so I have a pretty decent gaming machine at present to game at 1440p but I bought a HTC vive a few months ago and i struggle with performance in some games , so I would like to make some upgrades and have about 500-600 Euro to spend. I would ideally also allow room for getting a higher end GPU next year and going to a M.2 SSD at some point also.

Here is my current build.

Case: Phanteks P300

Motherboard: Gigabyte AB350m Ds2

CPU: Ryzen 5 1600

GPU: Gigabyte GTX 1070 Ti Gaming

RAM: Corsair 16GB DDR4 Vengeance LPX 3000MHz

Power Supply: standard 500w Bronze PSU

my main focus will be a new motherboard, as i would like an extra PCIE slot for the Vive wireless adapter, and have an M.2 slot for future upgrade. Having wifi built-in would be a plus too

and then getting a Ryzen 3rd gen CPU, and a new case and power supply to run it. my current case is fine, but it has limited space for extra fans. i have 2 Noctua fans at the front as intakes

but can only really fit 1 exhaust fan at the rear. When the case is completely closed the temps can stay in high 70s that's with everything running at stock clocks, and i have the front of the case slightly open to allow the fans to pull in more air.

that keeps things in the mid-high 60s.

i only rejoined the PC master race 18 months ago so I am a bit overwhelmed with all the options and could use some guidance.

cheers

I would upgrade the cpu to like a 2700. The 1070 ti is pretty comparable to the base 2060, so I don't think you're too GPU bottlenecked.

is the 2700 still likely to be good enough for the next 2-3 years?? I would be planning to move to either an RTX 2070 or 1080ti next year. will the 2700 be good enough when paired with either of those

There's no real reason to upgrade your GPU, unless it's having some issues, it should be around a 2060 super/Vega 56

You can just update your motherboard bios to support Ryzen 3000, then drop in an R5 3600, which would be maybe 15% faster than your current CPU, or more if you can manage to overclock your RAM, depends entirely on it's quality and how much time you want to spend doing that.

Otherwise if you want to buy a new board just go for an R7 3700X for a proper upgrade.

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

i am in Ireland :)

in terms of the GPU upgrade i would be planning to get the Valve index at some point , and worry a 1070ti would not be enough to drive that.

so i want to get upgrades now that would fit well with a newer GPU down the line.

And i am aware i could just update my MB BIOS but I would like an extra PCIE slot and support for master memory.

Dang, why can't you live in the UK things seem cheaper there lol.

By the time you get your index some new GPUs are probably going to be out. Like the "Big Navi" RX 5800 XT, which I'm assuming will be a 2080 super or 2080ti like GPU, for around $599-799

Otherwise your CPU(and RAM) is more important for hitting a stable 120fps, as you can just drop graphical settings so your GPU can run games that fast.

At 1440p it should be, but at 1080p you’ll run into a cpu bottleneck. I would check out comparisons between the 2700x and 3600 (since your current mobo should handle those). Also keep in mind that once you’re over about 90 FPS everything extra is just gravy.
