Sanding Necessary?

Im planning on spray painting the side panels of my CM N600 case, and I do like the texture of the metal/paint it has. do i "have" to sand it down before spray painting it or can i spray over what is on it?

Hello. I guess the case is powder coated or something?

Its not a smooth gloss, its a lightly powdered texture. certainly a metal.

The point of sanding something is to remove any existing coatings and to "rough" up the surface to give the paint something to adhere to. If you don't sand something the paint won't stick, will easily come off and it's just not good. You can spray over it without sanding, but chances are it's going to look rough and the paint won't last forever.

OK so you could take it back to bare metal which would remove the texture. Then etch prime > high build prime > sand (around P400 or lighter) > base coat > clear (if required).

A good finish is all in the prep work.

You guys are crazy. You know you guys are self-destructive. There's a funny farm somewhere and it's got your names written all over it. But I'm gettin' outta here.

you should be fine painting over a textured surface. in the end, sanding is just to add some texture for the paint to adhere to better. for plastic parts just clean the pieces with alcohol or acetone and then you can start painting

Just use a scotch bright pad and a lint free cloth, you don't need to take it down tom bare metal. The idea is just to  roughen up the top surface for the paint to stick, then wipe it with the cloth.
