I know that when Windows 2016 Server Essentials first came out, there were issues installing it onto consumer hardware, specifically NIC driver issues.  I am wondering if things have changed in the past 1-2 years?  My current home server is running Windows 2016 Server Essentials and the hardware is a Haswell E3 Xeon on a C226 mobo with 32GB ECC DDR3 RAM.  Recently I upgraded my gaming system and now I have a spare 8700(non-K) and 32GB DDR4 RAM.  I was thinking about getting a good non-OC mobo and replacing my current server's CPU/mobo/RAM.  My only concern is that I will be going from Workstation class hardware to standard consumer hardware and I just want to make sure I won't have any issues when Windows 2016 Server Essentials detects the new hardware.

What board are you looking at? Normally the biggest issue is the network card, so get one with a intel nic, or add your own nic from someone that has windows server drives.

I found found windows server 2016 to work with most consumer hardware pretty well. If it doesn't work out of the box, Drives for the nic might be fun.

Also id go 2019 these days, its a bit better.

I didn't have any problems myself with 2016 on a Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 5. Just had to install the drivers as per normal and it was off to the races.
