Hey guys,

a friend of mine wants to buy a laptop to use for school where they'll be using GIS (geographic information systems) software. I don't know much about this workload, anyone can recommend what to look out for ? It seems quite CPU and RAM intensive.

His budget is around 1000€. Any recommendations are welcome.

Thanks !

I'd look at a business class.laptop since he will likely need sustained performance and good/silent cooling for use in class. You don't want a gaming laptop sounding like a vacuum cleaner in the classroom.

Look at a Lenovo ThinkPad, Dell Latitude or HP EliteBook with a quad core i5 or i7 and an SSD

The problem with the business offerings is that they are usually under powered for the same price in my experience.

Not really. They offer similar performance but with VASTLY superior durability and reliability. they come with near silent cooling, better sustained performance due to the higher power target, water resistance,.sand and dirt reaistance. They can withstand shock and drops. Basically they're built to take abuse and perform well while making as little noise as possible.

Cheap commodity crap like the Aspires, Inspirons and Pavilions come with pumped specs but run extremely loud, overheat frequently, are very fragile and don't tend to last.  And gaming laptops are basically key engines. A friend got locked out of class back in the day cause his was making too much noise while compiling
