Hi I have a Xeon x3480. I get 99°C when I game and 60°C idle. Is this normal for a Xeon and will it affect performance?

No it is not. Get a decent cooler and paste or clean your existing ones.

Hey 5x5 how come the CPU doesn't shut down assuming TJ MAX is 100 and don't quote me on that.

99 =/= 100 my dood. Also most CPUs shut down at 110C AFAIK, they'll throttle hard in the high 90s-100 and that is unhealthy for the CPU though, but they don't shut down.

Ok cool thanks for the info.  I wasn't sure of the TJ MAX so I assumed 100c but ya Ive noticed most current CPU's are 110 TJ MAX.  But still isn't 99c dangerous in any way ?  Isn't that abusing the card ?  Also OT your video card are spinning fast when you game I assume uh ?

If you've noticed the shutdown point is 110C (or 105 like 5x5 said), why would you assume 100C?

Do you read? To quote the post of mine you quoted: "that is unhealthy for the CPU"

This.... this is a Xeon? It's.... it's a cpu...

Only Xeon to be a card is the Xeon Phi project. They've been on cards and stuff in old Mac Pros, but other than Phi I don't know of a time a Xeon has ever been a card, or a card had the Xeon label on it. They're CPUs.

Yes, your CPU hitting 100°C is neither healthy nor good for performance. It probably clocks itself down way under its base clock to avoid cooking itself. I definitely wouldn't push such an old CPU like that if you want to still use it for a while.

Regarding your video card: As long as only its fan is spinning fast and not the whole card with the motherboard attached to it you're probably fine. :D
Just install GPU-Z and give us its exakt name and sensor readings after 10min of Furmark / MSI Kombustor running, then we can tell you more about that too.

If you guys were wondering my CPU goes to 1GHZ

Yep. That's to keep it from dying very rapidly and possibly lighting on fire. It is throttling massively in order to try and keep temps down. What cooler are you running and did you mount it correctly with a proper amount of paste?
