Get Ryzen 5 3600 or GPU first

Sikansen

Hi. I'm thinking about upgrading my gaming pc. My budget is limited. So I don't know if I should get Ryzen 5 3600 along with new motherboard and ram first or new GPU. I have 1080p 144 Hz monitor. Playing some Dota 2 and Elder Scrolls Online. Want to try Battlefield V. Thanks for your help.

Current build:

Intel i5 4460

Radeon R9 280x

8 GB ddr3 1600 MHz

Planned:

Ryzen 5 3600

MSI B450 GAMING PLUS

HyperX Fury 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3466

OR

RTX 2060

GTX 1660 TI

Maybe used RTX 2070

A new cpu mobo and ram is a better upgrade, because if you were to upgrade the gpu, the cpu would most likely bottleneck it. Later on you can get a new gpu. Is there any specific reason you want a rtx 2060 rather than a rx 5700?

CPU!
Those GPUs you're talking about will be bottlenecked by your current i5

Also idd recommend a rx5700xt to go with the Ryzen. Better price/perf!

CPU + board + RAM first. You can get high fps for competitive play with low settings even if your GPU is weak, but not the CPU and RAM. Board just follows the CPU.

Ok, cpu first.

I completely forgot about rx 5700. Does it mean it's a good idea to invest into pci express 4.0 mother board? It will be like 100 bucks more expensive. I read there is basically no difference in gaming performance when using 3.0.

No, won't make any difference for this GPU. Every GPU nowadays doesn't really need 4.0

The current gen of GPUs can't utilize it from what I've seen.

That said, a lower end X570 board really isn't much differently priced than one of the recommended BIOS flashable B450/X470's.

So there is that to consider.

But really on the budget end, an MSI B450 A-Pro is a tough beat.

You know what, I'll recommend a 5700xt instead. It should be plenty with your current CPU for 1080p 144hz and processor can be upgraded later on.
