lightning nvidia vs gaming amd

hey guys, i am in the market for a new GPU now my list is down to the msi nvidia 770 lightning or the msi amd 280x gaming for the same price please bear in mind the improvements that are brought by of mantel. any good advice would help and please no fanboyism

The lightning card will be completely non- reference while the amd one is just a new cooler slapped on a reference board. Other than that there's heat from AMD cards to keep in mind as well as the (little) performance boost from mantle.

770 2GB is worthless, 770 4GB is fast as 280x, but 280x have mantle. (770 might get it too)

But if you need PhysX and other good technolgies, go with 770, if you want little more power and mantle, go with 280x

both are great (check slicks benchmarks if you really wanna know which performs better in what games), nvidia has g-sync which you might want in the future, mantle hasnt been completely finished and the 10%-15% (on average from what I can gather) that we're seeing is early results atm and its now likely more devs will adopt it given what we've seen already.

id work out the bang/buck, pick the 2 cards you like most, work out the price and find the games you like most and divide the price by the performance in fps.

ive noticed if i didnt use cuda in vegas 12 the cpu only used half the power and hence took longer, when cuda is enabled the cpu is maxed out and is quicker......what programs doesnt fully use the cpu? even freemake can max a cpu in file conversion, when using cuda the gpu in msi afterburner never went above 5%, im starting to think its b******t trickery, but maybe im wrong it was a gtx285

280x/7970s run cool with aftermarket coolers. The sapphire dual X 7970/280x runs no higher than 62*C.

 

Physx is amazing in Borderlands 2.. Couldn't imagine going back

Personally, with all the mining you can do on a 280X vs a 770, go 280x, mine when your computer normally would be off and profit

you could probably make back what you spent on it if you went for the 280x by mining, the 280x's 3gb vram will help alot at higher resolutions plus mantle will be more optimized soon for great performance increases. as for the 770 if it were me the only reason for me wanting to get it is if i wanted a cooler pc and or made videos because as far as i know nvidia cards are better for that?

So we're meant to believe it just because your slideshow says so? as much as i respect you m-ursu if your not willing to take linus's word or his guest's word you're on the wrong forum my friend (im totally jiving it wouldnt be the same without you!), ive tested vram in bf3 on ultra at 1080p (slicks beach level) and it only reached 1.2gb (give or take this was 3 days ago), PLUS in another recent thread a guy wa schosing between 2gb and 4gb 770 and while most pointed out the 780 (lol) it was clarified that for todays games 2gb is enough unless your doing 1600p.

4gb on a 256bit gtx770 is about as useful as the 2gb in my 128bit 7770, in games where you need that much vram you're likely to be memory bandwidth starved, its one thing i think amd got right with the 7970/280x which are known to be overkill for 1080p gaming

Okay, you won.

But i just need say that Linus'es video is quite old, so info is getting old, i truely have no idea why my Vram usage was so high with 290, with 780, vram usage is lower, but anyways i think that 2Gb is not enough for some current games at 1080p, but for most of games 2Gb is totally enough.

the 770 actually is a few % faster from what i've heard. The main deciding factor is if you mostly play games that will have mantle.

what i realy want to know is will the overclock with a lightning add a good amount of power for it to be better or at least equivilant to the 280x if mantel gave it around 20% boost?

and guys 2 gigs of memory is enough for me im using a 1080p display
