Hey LTT team and everyone else ?

In a past not so long ago, I was the proud owner of a OnePlus 7 pro. I was wheeled in by the brand name and their values and the overwhelming positive reviews.

Unfortunately the dream didn't last long. I was able to keep my phone for a month, before walking through the rain with my girlfriend. She had her iPhone and sadly one of our phones didn't make it (guess who ?)..

I talked to the OnePlus support team in my country (Denmark) and they informed me that if the phone didn't have any exterior damage, I should just send it in for repair (it was in perfect condition). But the service was refused and I have now have the option, to repair the phone for about 600€. They didnt remove the 15€ service fee out of good will.... Well I can't afford that so I guess I will go back to my OnePlus 2 and start saving again.

But I am quite angry at OnePlus and feel like they have falsely advertised the phones water resistance. I am not an idiot, I will not take my phone with me into the water while diving or swimming. I will not put in salt water or even try their bucket challenge. But this has me quite upset, I feel that the phone should be able to withstand a walk through the rain..

How is your experience with OnePlus phones and rain? How do you feel about the video with the bucket? Do you have any sort of advice to give me, that might help me convince OnePlus that this is not okay.

I look forward to your replies ?

@xhackforeverxdx Yeah I know - drops phone in a bucket - doesn't cover water damage. Which is fair to some degree I think, but come on OnePlus. One month old, no exterior damage, dies from a bit of rain...

Would you recommend the Samsung s10? I might be going for Samsung next (or some other more established company). Preeetty sure I won't ever buy anything from OnePlus again after this experience ?

I've had the 3T and now I own the 7Pro. I go disc golfing very frequently which often means I'm out in the middle of a rain or snowstorm. Normally I just keep a few plastic baggies with me, both in my car and in my disc golf bag. Toss it in there if you are expecting wet conditions.

Granted, I've also had it out in the "rain" but never for extended periods of time. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience, I hope if I have to contact support for any reason I don't end up angry with them as well. The price point of OnePlus has been too good to pass up vs the price of other similarly spec'd phones.

Oneplus phones are protected, just look at teardowns. Seals everywhere.

They just don't pay extra money for an "official IP-certification", as that would make the phone more expensive.

So yea.. you should be fine for anything a normal human would do with a phone. Like taking a Call during Rain (but then again, a normal Human would use an umbrella too :P ), or having accidents (spilling a drink over it in a Bar? idk)

Diving/swimming? I can seriously not imagine how addicted you need to be to your phone, so you can't even let it in your bag when you jump into a Pool.

I've used phones with an official IP68 rating fail under a light rain, and phones with no rating whatsoever come away unscathed in a torrential downpour. I haven't had the pleasure of One Plus devices, but my advice moving forward is to take official IP ratings with a grain of salt. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't and most of the time the warranty doesn't even cover the device if it's damaged by something it's rated to resist, such as water. Ridiculous.

Clad your next device in a case that's rated for resisting the elements, like Lifeproof or Otterbox. They at least stand behind their product if your phone gets damaged under their protection, so I put more stock in their ratings versus a phone. Just my two cents.

While I'm not unsympathetic, the fault lies with you for using your phone in the rain. Water and electronics don't mix. Your girlfriend shouldn't have been using her iPhone either, especially after all the iPhone commercials that reminded everyone water damage isn't covered by the warranty.

Water resistant doesn't mean water proof.

Maybe I need to clarify - I didn't use the phone. It was located in my pocket and so was my girlfriends phone.

Advertised water resistance?

By Oneplus themselves? I'd like to see it. I'm sure your friendly neighborhood lawyer would be interested as well.

To specify - not advertised as water resistant. But they are clearly stating that it should to some degree be able to withstand water. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2l7iiX5fHRc

Anyway. I just got some news from OnePlus. I ended up telling them to send me back my phone, and that I wanted to talk to "forbrugerklagenævnet" which is an  way of making a complaint about a company which is sanctioned by our goverment in Denmark.

They ended up offering me to repair for 300€ which is half of the original repair price. I agreed to this and now I am just looking to have a phone again :)
